Log and Temp directories are "Unwriteable"

On an rt_ionosphere 2.5 template all directories have the same owner, group and permissions (_www:_www 755). All of the directories shown in the System Information->Directory Permissions report are "Writeable" except the Log directory and the Temp directory.
I am trying to update from 2.5.8 to 2.5.11, but can't do this until I have access to those directories. I tried changing to 775, but it had no effect.
What could be causing this problem and what is the solution?

- Try 757, that must work...but you shouldn't use it because it might be a security risk. 755 is recommended but you need to fix the files/folders ownership in order for that to work properly.

That administrator link doesn't appear to work? just shows homepage?
