The problem wasn't caused by Gantry. The broken admin panel was the symptom, not the cause. The fault lay elsewhere but after 2 weeks of trying to trace it, I gave up. I then realised it would only take an hour or so to rebuild the site from a clean Joomla install so I cut my losses and took that route instead. In the end, not such a big deal.
By the way, I forgot to mention I had to move the /images directory as well of course.
