    • If you want to upgrade and go with the latest and greatest when released, and you incorporate a lot of extensions on your site(s), I would suggest checking with the major component providers of your 'must-have' J! toys and see what their plans are.

In the past, however, as Mr. Miller stated, the extension well is dry for quite awhile and they slowly trickle in as more and more migrate to the most recent J! release. ;)

Myself, I would wait until summer, easy...give it 6 months or so to work the kinks out and for more toys to be released.

    • dont know about that... the user group access system has been totally improved and the new templating system offers loads more opportunities that aren't possible in 1.5

Most sites don't need the ACL that 1.5 has now. And for sites that need it, there two well established extensions out there that have already worked out the bugs,

Nested categories...OK, but for most small business sites are they really needed? Not so much.

Templating? Oh yeah you mean...where you can assign page suffixes and different color schemes/views from the same same template to menu items?

      One word....Gantry!

Don't get me wrong I'm looking forward to the upgrade, but I was one of the people who started building a site in 1.5 when it was RC and it was very time consuming. So I guess I'm just over it.

      :P

    • You're right rich, there's basically nothing in Joomla 1.6 that you can't do today with a couple of 3rd party extensions (and do them better). The nice thing about 1.6 is that it comes with those features, but that will not really be a benefit until 1.6 is not only final, but out long enough that the major issues have been resolved.

Andy, the PR for Joomla! 1.6 covers issues beyond the immediate functionality.

I am thinking here about the code refactoring and claimed increases in efficiency and execution speed. Is that true? That all by itself might make 1.6 worthwhile. What do you think?

    • Let me first of all say that Rocket theme templates are nothing short of brilliant and the support is second to none.
On 1.6 conversions, I would hate to think that their work begins WHEN there is a stable 1.6. Worst... x months down the road. Its common sense that even when Joomla!1.6 RC1 is released this monday, only minor bugs will remain in 1.6 and in NO WAY would that affect the way compenents, extensions and templates integrate. I just hope that this discussion is a smokescreen and the folks at RT are actually converting AT LEAST THEIR MORE RECENT TEMPLATES. Doesn't make any commercial sense for them to start this work 3 months after monday 13 Dec. If that were to be the case, I would not be renewing my subscription till at least some RT templates had been converted.

For designers like me, I dont use many third party modules anyway. But I have noticed on Joomla Extensions website that SO MANY DEVELOPERS HAVE ALREADY CONVERTED THEIR MODULES TO WORK WITH 1.6. Go and check for yourself. Kunena, Jomsocial have all converted and will release very soon after 1.6RC1. I even know JOOMLART templates have mostly been converted and will be ready to roll very soon.

I joined RT for their template 'designs', not necessarily for thieir 'modules or extensions'. So, I would hope that RT at least has the courtesy to help delvelopers like me start using at least some of their TEMPLATES very quickly . Not necessarily modules or even rocket launcher, but just the plain templates themselves. A Gantry conversion should be a priority too, as well as the RTmenu system, Apart from that all other modules can be converted in time. This will at least allow some of us to use the more recent templates virtually immediately.

In reality, everyone is eager to update to the latest Joomla 1.6, No matter what you say, thats a fact. The longer RT delays in rolling out updates, the more more customers it will lose. I dont want to leave RT, but i will not hesitate to move elsewhere if my customers want 1.6 and I can't deliver.

I really think this discussion is depressing. RT should simply have one answer to everyone: "Yes we are working very hard to get templates converted and released as soon as possible". A statement like that would make a world of difference rather than references to x months!!

    • Maz I think you're misreading the conversation....AFAIK...RT has been working on them in the background and to be honest I think would be one of the first ones to have 1.6 available.

It's not a matter of starting work WHEN 1.6 is stable....there's no smokescreen, it's been mentioned in may threads that work is going on behind the scenes.

If I remember correctly Andy is on the working group for 1.6 templates so I seriously doubt your concerns are warranted.

I'm a user just like you so I can't speak for RT, but I'm, pretty sure I've got the facts pretty close.

      Cheers,

      Rich

    • Rich... Thanks for that. Perhaps i have misunderstood. When 6 months was mentioned earlier, or we should stick with 1.5 indefinitely, it did sound a bit unreasonable and I just felt a little frustrated. I have nothing but praise for the guys at RT and I'm sure they are working hard. Guess a little patience is needed.

      Maz
