    • Think About it...

It is possible to add the color chooser elements in yourself, a lot of "pro or commercial" users will know that from working with the gantry framework.

All these color choosers do is to set the parameter colour hash codes for the elements they are set for, which get called by the style declaration feature file, and then get added as css in the head of the template.

Not every template has the color choosers, they are added in based on the complexity of the style of the template, and if you have a real aversion to using CSS, perhaps you would be better off in the art of print design.

I would say color choosers are great for customers that don't want to mess with coding.
As a serious designer I would advice to use css. It gives more control, its faster and easier to cache.

That's funny. We had another guy in here, months ago, bragging about how PRO a designer he was. The simple fact of the matter is that the truly professional designers don't buy other people's templates. They design their own.

    • Hi there,

This may be semantics but anyone who attaches the prefix 'professional' is just stating that they make their living from it e.g. they get paid for that line of work.

A skilled and experienced designer will take whatever is available as the foundation for a project and then craft it into their own work. If nothing is available then they may very well design from scratch.

Both Henning and I had sites nominated for the JOscars and we both use Gantry as a starting point. Why reinvent the wheel every time. :cheesy:

    • "Web Designing" is split into three steps(or more):

      1. Actual Design in Fireworks, Photoshop, Indesign or illustrator etc.
      2. Development of any custom javascript (jquery, mootools) / php / ajax that needs to be written.
      3. Website build:
      i. setting up cms/boilerplate.
ii. implementing the design using css2/3, and html4/5 and images(rather than just slicing up the whole thing).
iii. adding javascript/php libraries, and other elements to make the site work.

      In general if you do:

      Step 1 + 3 = Website Designer.
      Step 2 + 3 = Website Developer.
      Step 3 = Website Builder/Architect/Implementer.

A lot of "design agency's" outsource all 3 of these steps; or 2, and 3.

There is also testing and delivery as well to add to those, or otherwise referred to as quality assurance.

Very little that is posted on the Internet is 100% true, however the percentage is high enough to dispense with any disclaimers. :)

      RE: Tyndie

I think your point is valid. People have a lot of different definitions of "designer". They range from mere "assemblers" to "heavy modifiers" to "creators". The people I have in mind, when I think of designers are those who are skilled in the artistic aspects of web site creation, combining great photography, color balancing and advanced content layout principles and crafting the whole end user experience.

I am most certainly not among those who I describe as designers, though I strive to use elements of their craft in different parts of my work.

    • Let’s be honest here, most “Pro”
Meaning Professionals : English Dictionnary —> engaging in an activity for gain or as a means of livelihood
Come to Rocket because they give an excellent product with a solid framework. In this day of age, competition is tough. Building a complete template from scratch is reserve for clients that don’t give to much importance to the final price, they just want that extra personalized touch. Even there, for that type of customers I will probably going the “Rocket” way.

      The Rocket advantages:
      • No waist of time in building the framework and assurance that the framework is solid & tested
      • Easy to readjust to whatever is needed, even if the design is completely different than the actual rocket template
      • Security update and forum support to iron out any problem

This is a safe, fast, affordable way of building web sites, my way anyway.

Again I’m not saying nothing about the fantastic work done by the Rocket Team but just try to point that certain tools should give more grainy control in important parts of a design process, like....
      • Colors, backgrounds
      • Header remodeling (Ability to readjust easily the “Header Section” of a site)
      • Typography
      • Uniformity and control of Module Header and Page and Component title
      • Control of the look and feel of the menu

Rocket template always give a relatively good dose of that control in the template manager and I will continue to push a more “Versatile”. “Flexible”, easier way, for me, as a designer to achieve professional results for my customers.

      Nothing wrong with that....

I think than more that 25 years of experience in Design and marketing (Architectural, print and web and other areas) give me the right to qualified myself as a professional. But I know, all that is ego, I’m just a little man that love is job to help people and company to present themselves and products in a better way. The degree of my competence and success come directly from the mouth of my customers.

      Andy,
Will this month's Joomla template incorporate the "Responsive" aka Masonry effect that I am beginning to see by other providers (Gavick, Shape5, etc)?
    • Thank you,
