    • One thing I always check when I'm looking at a new template is how it looks on the "category blog" menu item. Then I can see the basic design features without the distraction of the bells and whistles on the home page.

    • With all respect. Why should we forget the joomla core components?
      Very strange.

    • Yes Henning! All respect to you too.

But, you see and hear the critics. I hope so.
Please, take your chance and make it better.

    • I have to say that RT have always been terrific at spreading out the variety of template styles over the months and the years so that everyone's needs and wants are met over the long term.

So while I occasionally do have concerns waiting for the styles I most want, I know overall not to worry.

There's absolutely no doubt of the quality of the work being produced, so much of it is absolutely stunning to look at, and it works beautifully, and the team have a right to be proud of their talents and achievements.

But the people raising some requests at the moment probably understand, as I do, that the overwhelming majority of the most popular websites, with the lowest bounce rates and the highest success rates - are all sites with clean classic and subtle design elements, with hidden surprises and articulation of design in the smallest of places.

Which does NOT mean these members want an empty white page website.

So anyone who thinks they are making a point in shoving members to Afterburner - have missed the point entirely, and they're really making no point at all.

For me, templates such as Somaxiom, Chapelco, Ximenia, Fracture, Hivemind etc, and least of all Afterburner are equally out of place for my needs and wants as are Stratos, Oculus, Alerion, Diametric, Nebulae etc, and thats absolutely OK by me, everyone has their needs and RT do a great job of spreading the love around to everyone.

I've found templates such as Graffito, Voxel and Modulus very easy to modify to be unique for my own needs and projects at the time, Fresco was cool, as was Metropolis so nicely funky, Lumiere and others so unique.

For me, RT hit the classic elements of usable quality and popular design, colours, paddings, margins etc with designs like Solar Sentinel and Mynxx and many others, but then went into an entirely new direction with overall design concepts, without ever really hitting the ball out of the park with what was their present on course direction at the time, which is why I let my original 2008 membership lapse.

And even about 6 weeks ago I spent the weekend looking at other clubs, and studying their themes, ideas and concepts, believing RT is going too far in a direction which is too outside of what my needs are. Yet at the end of this very long weekend of searching, I still returned to RT as the best template providers.

I want all the gadgets and the hovers and the slides and the slick menus, and the gradients, and the colours to wow my visitors and myself, just in a slightly more tamed and a subtly and beautifully crafted manner.

Here's my own rule of thumb… church websites… some of the most beautiful sites I've seen belong to churches. Why? Because I believe the people who commission some of these sites, as well as the people who create some of these sites, believe they have to be created to a standard of beauty, simplicity, elegance and honour which is worthy of their majestic and pure beliefs. Some "News" style websites also hit the mark very nicely with their ability to share a lot of articles, topics, categories with their readers in a simple yet beautiful, and abundant and well organised manner.

Sorry for the long post folks, but it did seem a lot of people went off into a direction which was not originally intended by the members who were raising their own thoughts and ideas for their own preferences for design direction.

Oh... and I've often looked back to Mike's original post that got this thread started, so simple, just one line 7 years ago, and look at the monster thread he created :)

Excellent point. In my case, I examine all basic Joomla! functionality and how the recommended extensions make use of it (in the context of the template design). The next step for me is to ponder the opportunities for customization to meet workaday goals.
