Have you been inside Second Life?

    • I think Second Life is most notable for the marketing opportunities it represents.... Like MySpace, the high usership level represents a great target market.... maybe I'll set up a Joomla storefront there!

That could be a nice idea. Being in the ad agency (own one for 13 years) I'll tell you my brief thoughts...

The largest portion of things marketed in Second Life (SL) are clothes, body parts (hair, genitiles, etc.) for the avatars that people use. Links to websites runs second.

I have my doubts as to selling website services in SL. I really don't think that SL would be a good POS (Point of Sale) for those services, but you could, possibly, set up a 'presence' or some innovative avatar that 'brands' you concept and points to a website where a person buys.

Most people go into SL to get away from being marketed. Unless it was some stuff that accentuated your avatar or enhanced your SL experience (virtual land, a virtual, house), it probably wouldn't sell very well.

      But, I could be wrong!

Ha! That's funny, Damo! I've seen loads of pubs in SL. You can buy a drink in some - which is holding an empty glass and pretending your drinking something - drinks are usually free. BTW, I have a cigar with smoke that rises and all.

Actually, to me, it's like 3D paper dolls. You can dress you avatar up any way you like.

    • Thanks Dave... I was only half joking about having a Joomla storefront :P

Actually, SL interests me more as a space in which issues and cultural dialogue can occur... What I'd really like to do is set up an "Artificial Shark Fin Soup" restaurant that sells Vegetarian shark fin soup. I want to raise awareness about the fact that many shark species are now "functionaly extinct" due to over hunting by humans..

I'm a total newbie to SL... how much would I have to invest to start such a restaurant?

Ha! Sounds like you had quite the wardrobe!

Yes, they have been victims of their own success. In January there were over 1,000,000 SL 'residents'. Now there are over 5,000,000. They grew too fast and need to either change their architecture or bring in more servers. Remember, having an island in SL is like hosting lots of shared website - except these are 3D and you cursor is not an arrow but a 3D character.

I'm not sure but not that much, I'm sure. You just need to buy the virtual land (or rent) and build stuff. You might want to explore this. There are resources at SecondLife.com
