Ninjaboard replacing phpBB3

    • I'm using Kunena now and can't imagine going back to a bridge. Xenforo looks amazing, but it seems that is is all looks. Doesn't do much more than anything else as far as I can tell. You can't even subscribe to a forum without a 3rd party addon.

Ninjaboard looks nice too but still waiting for 1.6 stable. I installed latest beta into 1.6 with some finessing, but it's not ready.

Is RT making an "RT version" of Ninjaboard that will be available to the general public?

    • Ninjaboard 1.2 will be 1.6 ready.

There wont be an RT version, but the core version itself will be RT optimized you could say.

lol then you haven't actually looked at XF. ;)

      1) You can subscribe to a specific forum vs RSS.

      2) You can subscribe to a specific forum via a simple module that takes all of 30 secs to install.
      xenforo.com/community/threads/bd-forum-watch.10679/

      3) Every thread/topic can be subscribed to.

      4) XF is relatively new. As such, new features are being added (many of which are directly requested by the community) at a rapid pace.

How you could make such a blanket statement, and base it off of merely 1 issue, that it specifically is not integrated into the original forum, is beyond me. The feature DOES exist and to dismiss an entire product's benefits because it isn't integrated into the original code seems rather "simplistic".

    • that's just a biggie for me - they acknowledged that this is not built-in, but suggested:
      xenforo.com/community/threads/subscribe-to-a-forum.17302/

I just think I'm over the whole bridge concept. Having to update phpbb3 with all of my addons was a bear, then jfusion kept me up all night a few times. not sure I can take it.

Xenforo looks awesome though. Do you wrap it or just let it sit stand alone?

    • XF is relatively new indeed, but the developer team have Kier and Mike in it (former lead vBulletin developers).

And when you also take into account that they use Zend Framework, a Rapid Application Development then there's no surprise they're moving as fast as they are.

When you have a team of developers with years of experience, and you build your software on a solid and powerful architecture you can progress faster than ever.

We're doing the same thing with Ninjaboard, although we chose Nooku Framework, as it's the best RAD framework out there for Joomla, and its already kicking Zend ass on features they both got. But Zend with its years of development behind it got a more features than most frameworks.

There is one concern about XF you shouldn't ignore. And it's proprietary license. Not to be confused with a commercial license.
A commercial GPL license for instance allows you to use the software anywhere you want, and lets you learn from the code and change it any way you like. The difference being that you pay for being able to download your copy, compared to a Free GPL license.
A proprietary license is stripping you of all those rights, and wont give you the benefits a true FOSS community would (like Joomla, or even this community here at RocketTheme).

So to me, no matter how innovative the software is by itself and its features if it's proprietary then it's a step back.

    • This for me is one of the biggest problems with Joomla especially as most of the sites I do are video game related and really do require forum software. I have had a site up for about 2 months now using phpBB3 via RokBridge that is functioning perfectly well but I'm looking to build all new projects with Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 going forward. Of the free stand alone options I tested out SMF and MyBB for a customer last week and was very impressed with MyBB,certainly superior to phpBB3 in my opinion but bridging it to 1.6 is not really an option at the moment. I've also had the pleasure of using XenForo for the last few days over at clook hosting after moving from Rochen, very impressed but as Stian points out it's a very expensive solution. I then finally got around to doing a test install of Ninjaboard today and the Chameleon auto-skinning was incredible. I've never been keen on Kunena as it is difficult to match with Joomla templates so it looks as though going forward that Ninjaboard will be the best solution for me,looking forward to the 1.6 release and using it on new projects.

    • I am in the process of setting up a 1.6 site that will revolved around a forum. I bought a template for Kunena from kunenatemplates.net and it modified it to match my color scheme. It looks good and once NB comes online for 1.6 I'll convert it over. I'm officially done with bridges.

I don't understand this. You can modify XF anyway you wish. There are plenty of modules, there is plenty of help of edits of files and templates not only from the community, but from the staff as well.

The same was true of vbulletin. There were no limitations in what you could do with it. I don't see how licensing is an issue whatsoever.

    • @Jeremy let me clarify what I mean by modify.
I'm talking about changing the source code.

Any project or product that used a license that prohibited using modules or plugins would be quite useless don't you agree, so I think you know what I mean.

Can you make your own distro of XF for instance? Or use parts of their code in a completely different application?

Modules, tutorials for how to hack files and templates be it from the community or staff is by far no comparison to the GPL at all. I advice you to read the GPL to get a better understanding.

One more time, what you can do with the software in terms of how you can extend it or configure it is not the same topic as what you're allowed to do with the source code.

Licensing also isn't an issue. But the choice of using a Proprietary license on their codebase over an Open Source one is a big issue if you want those rights.

If not, then surely the license wont matter. It's a very individual decision where the right choice all depend on wether you need those freedoms or not.

But just because you might not see it being proprietary as an issue does not mean that it isn't for anybody else.

    • @gonzoyid and @Adam

Glad you like the design, it's something we've put a lot of effort into.

Also thanks for the feedback on your 1.6 needs, we're listening and will bump up the priority for it on 1.2.

      Cheers
