A commercial GPL license for instance allows you to use the software anywhere you want, and lets you learn from the code and change it any way you like. The difference being that you pay for being able to download your copy, compared to a Free GPL license.
A proprietary license is stripping you of all those rights, and wont give you the benefits a true FOSS community would (like Joomla, or even this community here at RocketTheme).
So to me, no matter how innovative the software is by itself and its features if it's proprietary then it's a step back.
I don't understand this. You can modify XF anyway you wish. There are plenty of modules, there is plenty of help of edits of files and templates not only from the community, but from the staff as well.
The same was true of vbulletin. There were no limitations in what you could do with it. I don't see how licensing is an issue whatsoever.
