Ninjaboard replacing phpBB3

    • I read in this article that Rockettheme is going to sponsor Ninjaboard for the coming year as their forum solution since phpBB3 cannot be bridged anymore in Joomla 1.6.

At the moment I am working on a new website which needs a forum solution and the website should obviously be build in J1.6. As you can imagine I was very pleased to read that article because I have read somewhere that Ninjaboard has really got a lot of potential (more then Kunena?).

Of course I can't wait for Ninjaboard to be compatible with Joomla 1.6 and integrated in Rockettheme. Is there any ETA, like this summer or coming winter? Also, can it be expected that Ninjaboard will be able to import everything from Kunena. If so, I can first start with Kunena as forum solution and then later switch to Ninjaboard.

I am not sure if this is the right place for this topic. Otherwise please more it to the correct forum.

      Thanks,

      Ewoud

    • Ah, there was probably a little confusion in that article. The fact of the matter is we are sponsoring some development of Ninjaboard as go-forward solution for the RocketTheme website, where we currently use phpBB3. This is not a short-term thing, but rather a long-term plan for a new version of the RocketTheme website that is 12+ months away. Also this is not saying that the current version of Ninjaboard is unusable, it just does not currently have all the features we here at RocketTheme need.

Also, we are not phasing out phpBB3 style support, however the bridge for phpBB3 is very complicated, in fact it was developed by Johan, who incidentally wrote the bulk of the Joomla 1.5 framework and is currently working on the Nooku framework. Based on the relative small community of phpBB3 users, and the complexity of the bridge itself, we currently have no immediate plans to port the bridge to 1.6.

I hope this gives you some more insight :)

    • Aha, I get what you mean. Although this answer puts me right back where I was unfortunately. I really need a good forum solution and on 1 of my (1.5) sites the phpbb forum solution works well for me and I was a bit disappointed that 1.6 is not going to be supported. Therefore I was really happy with that joomlablogger article as you can imagine.

I am afraid to ask but do you have any suggestions what the best way to go is?

I am still a bit confused on Joomla 1.5 support in the future, but also on future Joomla (1.7, 1.8?) releases and upgrade procedures. It is beyond the scope of my original topic but maybe you as a professional have some thoughts/knowledge about this :D .

    • The article says that RT is currently using phpBB3, but are sponsoring us to shape up Ninjaboard so it meets the requirements for a community like this one.

Ninjaboard already have a Kunena converter (you find it under Administrator -> Ninjaboard -> Tools, note: Kunena button wont be visible if Kunena isn't installed).
So you can safely use Kunena and switch to Ninjaboard later should you want to.

The only thing you can't do, is start with Ninjaboard and later switch to Kunena as easily. Only solution I'm aware of is this one: www.joomace.net/joomla-extensions/kunena-converters

So since Kunena is more mature, I do recommend that people that need features Kunena got but we don't, use Kunena until we do instead of switching to Ninjaboard and wait.

Or you could use phpBB3, SMF 1.1 or Agora, we support those too.

Oh and while we don't have full 1.6 compatibility yet, but we only got two bugs left to solve.
One is that we are on MooTools 1.2 in our backend, and some of our js needs the 1.1 compat layer to work, as we try to support Joomla 1.5 wether you got the mtupgrade plugin enabled or not.
Second is the changed ACL in 1.6 that changes the way users are assigned to groups. In 1.5 each user is assigned to a single group, but in 1.6 you got multiple, so we haven't worked out how to solve that yet.

In Ninjaboard 1.2 we'll drop support for MooTools 1.1, and require you to use mtupgrade or similar, so that's when we'll work on 1.6 support once more.

As for rockettheme integration, if you mean by templates, then that's already supported as seen on our demo: ninjaforge.com/demo/ninjaboard/ninjaboar...emo&id=5&format=html
One of my favorites are Crystalline: ninjaforge.com/demo/ninjaboard/crystalline/forums

Regarding the sponsor we'll do an official announcement on our site this week with some more information on what this means for you as the user, and perhaps what features that'll come in June thanks to the sponsorship :)

      Cheers!

    • Hi Stian,

Thanks for the extensive reply. I am pleased to read that you have a kunena converter and plan to work on J1.6 compatibility within the next few months. My plan for releasing my new website is probably around August so if necessary I can start with Kunena. If the team of Rockettheme is supporting you then Ninjaboard must be something special :D .

Do you have any idea when you will start working on integrating JomSocial?

The main components I will use are Joomla 1.6, jReviews, JomSocial and hopefully soon your Ninjaboard.

Keep up the good work Stian.

      Thanks,

      Ewoud

    • Another option, if you are willing to pay for a license, is XenForo.

      www.xenforo.com

If you need just a simple forum system, it is probably "easier" to just go with a native board. But in my community, where the forum really "is it"...and has been for years...we need quite a few features. We prefer to be on the cutting edge in that respect, and XF is the only board I've found (out of perhaps 15 or so researched prior to making the migration from vb) that even comes close.

I'm a former vbulletin user since it's version 1 (over 10 years). Due to a variety of issues, we've been forced to look for an alternative forum system. XF is by far, the most modern, advanced yet simple forum system on the market today, and it's only getting better. It's developed by the same guys who started vb (back in the day).

Right now, there is a fully functional bridge between XF and Joomla 1.5. A modded version works for 1.6 and a more official version is in the works (members have posted their sites with 1.6 and XF and it works fine).

There simply is no other board that can even come close with XF. Far too many reasons to list here, I recommend heading over to the site to check it out.

I have been following the software for a while, could you point me in the right direction for the bridge.
