    • Sweet James! What a great write up, I was going to hit on a few points tonight, but I guess I don't have to now, looks like you covered all the basics. I hadn't come across Textmate yet, I will look into that. I Spend more time on Mamp and I do on the web it seems like these days, what a great program. I like CSSEdit but I have spent so much time in Dreamweaver learning all the functions in stuff its hard to move away from that. I don't know what I would do without spaces, what a great program, It almost makes not having two monitors at home feasible. Thanks for all the great info.

    • I've recently converted after spending almost 14 years of my life/career using PCs. I've always been a Mac-hater; I despise the whole Mac "ethos", always have, but since getting into design I've become more and more curious to see what it's all about.

After spending so long with PCs and Windows, you get blind to the issues and accept it as part of the PC way-of-life - such as the side cover of the PC being off to poke around with something, or the regular formats to sort out Windows problems.

It's hard to explain why, but when using Leopard on a Mac, you simply don't get that nagging feeling that your software will crash, or you will need to do a reboot soon because resources are running low. You just *don't* get it...really quite a weird (but nice) feeling.

Plus, for development, it's like a dream - I can test in XP IE6, Vista IE7, Safari, Opera, Camino, plus Ubuntu Linux (and other flavours of Linux, eg KDE and Konqueror) and make sure my templates work across the board, all without needing a single reboot - if I'd have known I probably would have converted sooner.

You need a few days to get into the new style of workflow, but I'm already rolling now with the new features, and I know that in a coupe of months I will wonder how I ever did without them.

The only downside is that, because I work from two locations, I find myself having to lug around the Mac (and it's a 24" iMac) from place to place ;) Still, it's pretty easy, just two wires to plug/unplug, I just love it.

It's a lot of money to spend I know - I had to think long and hard - but so far (for me at least) it seems like money well spent.

    • You guys are pretty convincing, thanks for the detailed write up James. I guess I need to visit the apple store and make a decision on Imac, Mac Pro or MacBook Pro. One more question concerning hardware. Is the Imac more or less like a laptop as far as upgrade ability? or can you swap out processors and video later on?

You can only swap out the memory. Everything else is built-in - although just how fixed it is I have no idea...

Yeah, not too sure on this either. I am sure you can just might be a lot more difficult. Might have to ask Apple about that if no one here is aware.

Like Dan said, you can swap the memory, I put 4gb in my Macbook Pro, no problem :)

      ---

As for what to choose, that is entirely up to you. Each have their benefits and downsides but ultimately, it depends how you like to work. I am very much a laptop person, so obviously the Macbook Pro was the obvious choice, desktop's just don't do it for me.

The iMac is basically the mix between a desktop and a laptop, just the screen. According to Kevin, the iMac is stil quite mobile with it all being in one single place (the screen), just requiring you to plug it in.

The Mac Pro is the mega desktop deal which should be a lot easier to upgrade and has the possibility for more. Which is a plus, but only if you need that added power like a duo-quad core processor, 8GB+ ram, duo-30" screens etc, etc, etc... hehe.

All are fabulous machines, just have to choose the type that suits you :)

    • Well, everyone wants the best...but it's not necessarily within everyone's budget. I mean, a Pro costs around $3k right? That does not include an Apple screen - which for me was a big part of the attraction. The 24" screen on its own must cost around $1200. That's a hell of a lot of money.

    • Dan your right!

But i mean, you can change your screen, you can get better graphic cards, you can costumise you Mac like you want - Video-Audio etc.
Really the iMac is a very good selection. ::)
