    • Well, I feel much more comfortable on my desktop, using a laptop i find sometimes annoying as far as the keyboard there is smaller. It even makes me checking an e-mail much longer (that touchPad, numbers..).

But i considered my potential MacBook to be mobile, to take it to cafe, work a little there, or even only check my mail when travelling.

I use a stand, external keyboard and mouse for my laptop (also, monitor) on my desk so I have everything I need, then I just disconnect and I am on the go, but then I also, carry a spare mouse and keyboard in my laptop bag with me. Plus, another stand to lift it up up off the table 45 degrees viewing and also to protect it from spills on the table at the cafe'.

    • I use a 15.4" laptop (6.6+lb)with Windows XP at home, hooked to a 19" lcd monitor for a second screen with the desktop stretched across both screens - great to have the extra real estate for editing websites, managing files, and chatting while working online.

I use a 12" laptop (Toshiba R200 - bit less than 3lb) with Windows XP when I travel to conferences and record the speakers with it and write the reports on it - about 3 months each year. I can also edit websites, just not as conveniently. I found that lugging the extra weight of a big laptop around was just not worth the extra effort.

I started my computer life as a Mac person and switched to Windows years ago. I've never felt disadvantaged, especially in recent years. Admittedly, I do not do heavy-duty graphics work. When I have copied folders and files from my friends' Macs, I get confuzzled by all the extra bits and pieces that seem to come with them (index files, I guess). ???

So I'm very happy with my Windows laptops. I';m not a computer geek, just a 59-year old self-taught guy who has turned a hobby (building and managing websites) into a pocket money career now that I'm retired from full-time work. And Joomla has added years to my life!! ;D

    • There is a stereotype that Macs are for *graphic, music or video* people but that strictly isn't the case. It's really for anyone but each to your own, whichever you prefer.

As for the files, I bet you are referring to the .DS_store files. Windows has similar files, the infamous thumbs.db files =) But you can get Apps to remove them both.

    • Just to throw my 2 cents in...

I have used a PC since before 1997 and I used a Mac from 1999 to 2006. Here is what I experienced.

Both computers and operating systems had their problems. I had my Mac crash just as much as my PC.

Mac's do tend to be a little less apt to get viruses.

My PC's cost me half what it would cost for the same power in a Mac.

I never noticed a big difference in time saved by using a PC or Mac, they both ran about the same speed.

Software for the PC cost me half what the software for Mac costs.

There are many more programs and games available for a PC.

Fixing a PC is much easier than a Mac, since the parts aren't proprietary.

These are just what I could think of. That is why I am now still using a PC. It makes me laugh everytime I see those Mac commericials. I do think the Mac has created a better following and Mac is considered cool to the younger generation. I have had a Dell Laptop with Windows Vista for two years and have never had a problem. I think if there are complaints it must be because of user error and not because of Vista.

I would have a Mac if they were cheaper, but right now, it doesn't make sense to me.

    • With respect to productivity, it seems that I get more work done on my Macbook pro. Dont know how I could ever live without it.

But heres a question for you mac users. What do you all think of Firefox on a Mac. Its greats with the tools that you can add on, firebug, yslow, etc.

But for a stability viewpoint, sometimes FF on a Mac crashes more than on my PC.

    • As for Firefox, I have been using Firefox 3 since it came out and it was crashing like....something that crashes :) Recently, its been a lot more stable. To be fair, I am a frantic user so likely to crash an application from clicking everything at once :)
