    • My personal preference is to have as much screen real-estate as possible. That generally means a desktop, either a 24" imac, or a mac pro with as a big a screen as you can afford. If you need portability then obviously a macbook pro is the better choice. I can't imagine doing any meaningful work on a little 13" macbook, or macbook air. Those are just for traveling with and checking emails and stuff.

    • I'm not a gamer or into the golly gee whiz, but a working computer + screenestate ;D is a must...I have my laptop hooked to a monitor and set to dual monitor... ;)

Been in both worlds when I ran my studio on a combo of mac and pc - each have there +/-'s, but they all crash and cause me to hit my head on the wall and say bad things. :o

I would suggest looking at what software you have or will need, plus their alternatives (for cost effectiveness), then second look at what peripherals you have or will need and again assess from there. Example if all your current stuff is outdated and needs to be replaced...then it is a coin toss, but if you already have a large assortment of software and peripherals suited to one system...well, that saves you money and time.

And just because someone says, well you can run your pc stuff on a mac does not mean it applies in your circumstances. I have a client that bought all new macs, ran the software windows conversion for mac (which states it is has issues) and used it for their business. Needless to say, they were down to writing receipts by hand, because the system crashed big time. At home down time is okay, you just troubleshoot, but for them -

They ordered 4 new Johny on the spot Dells and now run their store with those, and they run their macs as macs somewhere else. The cost was ridiculous for the time down, the troubleshooting, etc... Does this mean mac's are bad and pc's our good? No, means didn't look at the whole picture.
So, it is not a what world is better, it is a what suites your world better.
      ;)

As for the little lap tops.... :o I have a heart attack watching people use those little screens. :P I feel like I am in the land of the munchkins.

I've recently converted after spending almost 14 years of my life/career using PCs. I've always been a Mac-hater; I despise the whole Mac "ethos", always have, but since getting into design I've become more and more curious to see what it's all about.

After spending so long with PCs and Windows, you get blind to the issues and accept it as part of the PC way-of-life - such as the side cover of the PC being off to poke around with something, or the regular formats to sort out Windows problems.

It's hard to explain why, but when using Leopard on a Mac, you simply don't get that nagging feeling that your software will crash, or you will need to do a reboot soon because resources are running low. You just *don't* get it...really quite a weird (but nice) feeling.

Plus, for development, it's like a dream - I can test in XP IE6, Vista IE7, Safari, Opera, Camino, plus Ubuntu Linux (and other flavours of Linux, eg KDE and Konqueror) and make sure my templates work across the board, all without needing a single reboot - if I'd have known I probably would have converted sooner.

You need a few days to get into the new style of workflow, but I'm already rolling now with the new features, and I know that in a coupe of months I will wonder how I ever did without them.

The only downside is that, because I work from two locations, I find myself having to lug around the Mac (and it's a 24" iMac) from place to place ;) Still, it's pretty easy, just two wires to plug/unplug, I just love it.

It's a lot of money to spend I know - I had to think long and hard - but so far (for me at least) it seems like money well spent.

i noticed your new ride.....i bet you didn't buy it to pop the cover off and tinker around..inside......lol....
same reason to buy a mac....just sit back and go....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    • I think another thing is simply personal preference.

I don't find Mac intuitive. I don't find any Adobe products intuitive. For some reason, my mind doesn't 'work' that way. But, I'm also not a designer/artist. I'm more of a server admin person, and database/logic geek.

I learn what I need to do with PS and FW, but it's like a Lefty trying to write with their right hand.

I'm not sure if it's because of almost 20yrs of PC use and familiarity, or just my 'wiring'. Though, it still boggles my mind that Mac has only ONE mouse button?!? ???

So, I certainly understand how designers/artists seem to be completely in-step with the whole Mac experience, I know I tend to prefer choice, freedom, options, and of course, above all, what works best for me.

When recommending a computer to people, it's important for me to know how they think, what they intend to do, and their needs. Most people will do best with Windows. The other 4% of the world will do best with Apple.

You Mac people are an elite, unique group. Remember that most people do not think/work like you do. Just like most people don't know what BCC is on their email. And... people still use AOL. ;D

    • But isn't buying 17' MacBook Pro a little foolish? Meant to be mobile, it is really big. One will be disencouraged by the size and will keep it on the desk? Or maybe it's only a solution for those who go to clients homes, but there you won't design much, will you?

:) of course, but using the words that non-geek, non-tech, non-semantic people use, PC="DOS/Windows based/IBM compatible/normal computer", and MAC="Apple/Macintosh/Powerbook/iMac/cool looking thing from the company that makes iPod"

Would I call my Commodore 64 a PC? Or my Amiga?
'We' know the difference, but we also know what an Amiga is. :)

The Macbook aren't *as* big as similar laptops of the similar size. That is what I found comparing my 15" macbook pro and 15" acer.

    • I do not design websites for clients - but for my own ideas, not as a job but similar. What would you recommend me:
a 15''/17'' MacBook Pro or a second LCD screen and some additional hardware for my PC, for such needs?

I'm really curious what to choose, which would give me biggest satisfaction.

    • Well, it depends on you personally. I am very much a laptop person and would always follow that router and then, if the circumstances force/allow, use an additional display.

I know that Andy and Kevin much prefer their desktops and large displays so its hard to really say.

Do you prefer using a laptop or a desktop?
