Ok today I had fun with the 24" iMac in a Mac shop, and damn I am falling in love with it.. Probably not the Mac with most muscles - but I like the simple look of it.
But my question... is there a list somewhere for Windows users that are looking for programs that can do the same as old Windows programs did...?
Something like:
Notepad - Mac Equvilant
UltraEdit 32 - Mac Equvilant
MSN - etc..
WS-FTP Pro - blabla
Simply a list of software that is good to have for a Mac, software that is able to do the same as other programs one might have had when he had a Windows based computer.
I really am close buying one of those nice Macs... just curious.
If only things were that simple! Why purchase a Porsche or a Maserati (well, I wouldn't purchase a Maserati anyhow... so... yeah I'm a Porsche driver for life) when you can go buy kit and have a kit car!
Mimicking something doesn't mean you're anywhere near the real experience. The moment you hop in a 911 or a Cayman (Porsche), you're transported to a different world. The Mac is the Porsche of the computing world.
And like how a kit car replica won't get you entrance into C&C, Windows with a GUI replacement doesn't get you into the Mac experience either. Sorry!
Yes, there are equivalents to those applications. Although I don't run a MAC exclusively, my daughter does....and many many many of my friends do. Like ANY community... there are plenty of people that will help you out when you have issues.
I don't post a bunch in this community, but I do read it quite a bit.... and I've read plenty of your posts....and followed your tutorials. Matter of fact I used your tutorial to help create
www.nod32av.com
. I have more work to do there... but I appreciate your tutorials.
Based on what I 'think' about you and your work....you would absolutely love working on a MAC. The learning curve won't be that steep. You'll just have to get use to a different set of applications... but ... it won't be that hard.
I'm not going to have an opinion on which one is better than the other... BUT>.. go here...
www.download.com/2001-2003-0.html
; ... at the bottom of the page you'll see an area titled "An Introduction to MAC Software". Click on any of the links... and it will take you to pages full of that type of software.
There are applications like "Fetch and Stuffit" that have been around forever, and that you've probably heard of somewhere along the line.
For the record... I could care less whether somebody uses a MAC, PC, Linux,BSC or Secret Decoder Mood Ring.... as long as they get the work done, and have fun doing it.

thomas i suggest going to download.com or another of its ilk ... search for your program (eg. messenger) ... the results will show various messenger programs and the program it is compatible with... you can then filter your search for MAC results...
going by your designs on your site,... and your attempt at rkttheme logo, i'd say you'd put a MAC to good use.. with graphic designing and such... as for me, *cough*windows does fine... along with the occasional fiddling with suse.
See Thomas... I'm not the only one who thinks you'd do GREAT and Wonderful things with a MAC!!! Gollum AGREES!!!
Fiji??? (Off topic momentarily... Gollum... tell me the truth.... Is Fiji Water (
www.fijiwater.com/
) really from artesian wells... or do you pull it off a spikot in the kitchen?

Basically there is everything you are looking for on the mac only they are better and more fun to use than the windows variants, let me quickly outline some apps on the mac you would use instead of the ones you listed:
notepad -> textedit (builtin)
ultraedit32 -> textmate or skedit
MSN/AIM/ICQ -> Proteus or Adium
WSFTP -> Transmit or YummyFTP (there are a tonne of FTP clients)
PuttySSH -> ITerm
OutlookExpress -> Apple Mail or Thunderbird
You get the idea. There's really nothing you can't get on the mac these days.
