Agreed. You can't go wrong with a Mac. There's a die-hard .NET, C++, C# programmer at work (Verizon) that was down on the Mac for years. Now he's buying one. His tune has changed. They are very robust.
I'd like to second the suggestion that you go for the Mac Pro. I've gone with towers the last few purchases. I have a sawtooth G4 Powermac that is going on 8 years old and still going strong. It shipped with 64 mb and since OSX it is upgradable to 1.5 GB--unheard of when it I bought it, but now it is quite reasonable. I have 1.25 GB of ram in it now. I upgraded the processor from 400mhz to 1 ghz for very little money. The expansion card slots have allowed me to install USB2 ports (not available then), upgrade the video inexpensively from 16 mb to 128 mb with dvi. Another slot has been used for a new controller card, so I could install much bigger hard-drives than the original configuration could support. I probably spent under $450 for these upgrades including a 250MB harddrive (excluding the RAM--that was bought over such a long period of time that I don't know). I expect this to be a fully functional computer for 10 years. Additionally towers are just plain easy to work on.
My main machine is a G5 duo upgradable to 16GB of RAM; whereas, the iMac they have for me at work a few months later is only upgradable to 2 GB.
I also agree about RAM. The difference between 1 GB and 3 GB is amazing. The 500 MB of my machine at work doesn't cut it at all.
Do it, Thomas. I'm not slagging Windows or Linux, but the Mac is such a nice ride. My G5 tower has been almost trouble-free for three years. Still a robust workhorse -- and the new Mac Pro eats fire.
i've had pc's for years ... last year i bought mac and we didn't get along but i'm starting to think i just got a dud machine. it seems mac is the way forward and i'm thinking about giving it another go. problem is i've just spent Kr25k (about £2k) on a dell m1710 xps ... which if i'm honest hasn't let me down and does everything i ask it to in an instant (upgraded to 2gb ram)
if i'm going to get a mac it's got ot be a desktop to begin with simply because the xps still has a couple of years in it ...
if you already have a good monitor, as you probably do with the dell, i would suggest a mac pro 2.66ghz, it's the best bang for the buck and is a quad processor machine (2 X dual core). It can be upgraded to 16gigs of ram, and also has been proved to be upgradable to quad core kentsfield chips, plus it has 4 internal hd bays, etc.. you really can't go wrong with this machien especially as you can still run windows either with bootcamp or inside os x with parallels.
