Nope, some replies take longer that others... :)

Sorry I took so long to get back to you.

One more suggestion when you're starting a new project and have chosen a template:

Create two databases and perform two install of the template, one with sample data, one without.

( You are given the option on screen six during the installation process.)

Then, using the install with the sample data as a guide, build the site using the template that had no data installed.

It will be completely empty, so it may look a but scary at first, but once you start publishing Menus, Modules, Articles, etc., it make it really easy to see the changes you make while your site comes to life.

When I first started with Joomla I found it very difficult to build a site with sample data installed.

With everything already published, searching for it on the back end, editing content, deleting unwanted content, etc., was tough.

Not to mention deleting some stuff gives you undesirable results, broken links, etc.

IMO, I think you can set up a site from zero and add all your content to the site without the sample data in less then half the time it takes digging through all the data in a full install.

Another advantage is by the install with the sample data intact, all the the features are included so you can quickly reference them, along with the tutorials that are included.

Note: In the download section, for each template, there are PDF tutorials as well.

      Good luck!

Let us know how you're doing.i

    • Hi, another newbie here. Regarding Andy's comments on editing a template, I'm about to launch into the Joomla learning curve and want to make sure I understand the concept and don't follow a path to nowhere for a month. Not expecting lessons here, just a clarification of what I think I am reading.

After reading an intro to Joomla and nosing around the Rocket Themes site I got the impression that all the parts contained in a Joomla site, (and therefore in a template), were determined and controlled by the various managers of the Joomla back end, and once I understood those managers I could find the various parts and edit them. Now, in reading Andy's comments, it seems that graphics, for example, are managed by style sheets and are contained in html docs and those docs are managed in the back end control panels. Is that the case?

In other words, I have been searching the various modules and such for references to graphics files. It seems that is the wrong concept. If someone could expand a bit on this I would appreciate it, and I'll be on my way.

    • There's two parts to a Joomla site, the template, and the contents.

The template controls the layout, you control the content, what gets published where.

Think of the template like a bookcase of sorts, if you look at the template positions for each template, you'll see the layout is different, just like the various bookcases you'll find in a furniture shop.

All the elements of the templates are controlled by various css files, mainly the template.css.css, and style.css.

With those, you can modify or tweak colors, and Module behavior, e.g., the size of the logo, Module highlites, etc.

The content, like the books in a bookcase, is controlled at the Article and Module level by you.

To sum it up, if it's not content related, it's controlled by editing the template files, if it's content related, it's controlled by editing the Articles and Modules.

If you have more questions, it's be helpful if you posted in the forum for the specific template you're using.

    • I've just joined the phpBB3 club and tried to install it in through J! admin . . . doesn't work . . . then I tried to read the installation tutorial, but it says I don't have access to it?

How do I access the install info?

      Thx ~ debi

    • Joomla and phpBB are two different things.

The best way to install phpBB is to create a new database and install it separately.

Create a new database for phpBB, unzip the phpBB package to its own folder, then run the install.

If you plan to bridge the two, place the folder inside the joomla directory.

You can find installation instructions here:

    • Oh! I thought that I was buying a quick start for phpbb!

I've done a phpbb install before and it was time consuming . . . I've wasted my $$ here at RT . . . I didn't need a bb as complicated as this . . . I would have gone with mamblog or something very simple if I'd known this was not a complete package . . .

thx for the quick response :)

    • Ok . . so I'm going to tackle the install . . . should I use RokBridge and if so, any "heads-up" for which I need to be aware?

Can joomla 1.5.x and phpBB3 be successfully bridged? I did it manually before (prior to 1.5) but it took a LOT of work and I doubt if I can duplicate it again! I was rather hit-or-miss in my approach, and didn't keep good notes for myself.

So any direction would be helpful. Thx!

BTW, part of my confusion about the phpBB3 club purpose came from this post in your demo:

"RokBB3 is a brand new module from RocketTheme. It allows user easily manage layout of phpbb3 template and integrate with Joomla installation."

I read that to mean the product would integrate the installation of phpBB3 IN Joomla.

The other part of my confusion was "wishful thinking" . . . I've been watching your site for a while about it because I thought the product being offered was more than a template . . .

    • I'm a bit stuck and need some guidance.

I run a quite surprisingly busy site around a TV show I make in the UK. It's simple html, done on Dreamweaver. I looked at Joomla years ago, thought, no, too complicated.

I just bought into this club, did a Mediamogul installation with Rocketlauncher - great, it all works! The site looks like I want it to look, excellent!

I've done a couple of very simple changes, but now simply want to start uploading stories, and putting them into the slots that already exist and contain sample content. But I can't find a really simple guide to this. Where should I look for a straightforward guide that will help me?
