All commercial extensions & templates available for Joomla are now open source?
Posted 17 years 10 months ago
So this morning I browse to Joomla.org and I see the homepage has new content, a new article about a new push for GNU/GPL within Joomla.
I'm not sure what it all means. Are all the commercial extensions available for Joomla are now open source? There are some really great ones that would have cost a ton of money, like the iJoomla ones, but those are free and open source now, right?
And the rockettheme templates, those are all open source, too, now, right? They can be posted anywhere, but as "composite works," without the images and CSS, right?

Gollumn,
Thanks for your reply. Can you explain why? I'm not trying to be obnoxious, just figure this out. Does your "NO" cover the multiple questions in my post?

Templates are not fully covered by the GPL, if you had read the article carefully you would understand that. Only the php/html is which interacts with Joomla. However the CSS and images are copyrighted, and the javascript could be if Andy so wished it.
to be honest, without the css the templates are fairly useless. You could get by without the images but not the css.
Also covered in the article and the FAQ is the fact that all components are not suddenly open source.
It is up to the copyright holder to decide what to do. But they cannot remain non GPL and integrated with Joomla.
GNU/GPL does not mean -free- as in without cost. You can still sell GPL programs. You just can't prevent people from distributing it after they purchase, something also covered in the article and FAQ.
Gollums 'no' was directed at all your questions, as it is the answer to all your questions.

James,
I did read the thread you mentioned. However, the stuff on the Joomla frontpage is more current. The thread you mention reflects thinking that pre-exists the final verdict of the core team (I think).
The news release this morning includes the following section:
How does the treatment of templates differ from the treatment of components, modules, and plugins?
In our opinion, templates are composite packages that consist of both code elements and non-code elements. We believe that the code elements of a template must be licensed under the GNU GPL because they are derivative works. However, the non-code elements are just data acted upon by the software and may be licensed in any way the author sees fit. The non-code elements include elements like Images, Movies, Animations, CSS and formatting markup.

If you want to split hairs then possibly yes you could post the index.php and only the index.php file.
However it shows a complete lack of repsect to do so 'just because you can' and not because you have actually added any significant benefits to the product.
I really hope you were asking for curiousity's sake and not because you have the intention of doing everything you just proposed.
