    What's the best PC motherboard/graphics?

Posted 17 years 7 months ago
    • DISCLAIMER: Although I'm on my 14th Mac and plan to by a new tower in the future, I need PC advice this time.

QUESTION: What is the best motherboard that is available? I want to build my own super gaming machine that is tops. I'm would like a quad core, if possible and either Nvidia or ATI graphics compatibility - bridging two graphics cards.

I know how to assemble the separate parts, but don't know what's on the market or where to look.

I want something more than what MicroCenter or Fry's Electronics may have to offer - a machine that would make the best Alienware box tremble with fear.

      Any suggestions or links?

      dave

    • Well I have a gaming machine
      unfortunately couldn't afford quad core
but I got ATI X1950 512MB at the mo
best on the market they say
think you could crossfire them to ::)

Motherboard, don't really no, it all depends really
I had to buy £100 psu with three 12v rails to power it
I had trouble with a few mobos not working with it
but picked one off the site, fairly nice can take 8GB + Dual Channel mem

It all depends on you budget the exact stuff you get though...

      Thanks Blogg-x,

Right now, budget is not an issue - but please don't recommend the diamond studded laptop for $1mil!

    • Well I would prob get -

      Corsair PSU
Compatible Mobo with fast memory, Dual Channel, and loads of PCI and two PCI excpress
Then I would get 4GB Memory
And 300GB HD (preferablly not all in one HD)
this processor - www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119919 (mobo must be gd to take that)
Then 2 ATI X1950 graphics cards if you can crossfire them
Then get good mouse and keyboard and good monitor

    • newegg.com has always been a good place to shop for me....never done me wrong.....

It's been awhile since I did a lot of gaming but I have built a few gaming rigs in the past....
In the past AMD processors ruled the gaming world but I think that is changing with some of Intels latest offerings....
Quad Core, LOTS of Expensive,High Quality High Speed DDR2 RAM, ASUS or MSI board, A pair of the best GRFX Cards you can afford, (Gforce 8800's maybe or a pair of ATI X1950's ) Quality Antech power supply to run all of it and you should be in good shape Dave.....Interesting to hear others opinions.....
If you want to find out what the BADDEST of the BAD is we need to ask a teenager...... :o

www.tomshardware.com/  ; Has some good hardware reviews....

If you really are going to build one I find it helpful to scour the internet for reviews about hardware before actually investing in it.....the sick thing is you could spend several grand easily on a bad to the bone system today and within 18-24 months it's "obsolete"......

    • Can always get cheap parts at new egg. www.newegg.com

      Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield 2.66GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
ASUS Striker Extreme LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX The Ultimate Gaming Motherboard
      OCZ Gold 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1100 (PC2 8800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

The mother board is SLI so you can put 2 of whatever graphics card you decide.

      Just to start lol

One of the kids I play Medal of Honor with goes to school for animation and he dropped $1800 on a card :o

Don't need quad core to run The Sims, DG :P :-*

Dan, you caught me! However, I shoot photos in Raw and have huge PSD files. My needs are still valid, correct?

Thanks Bloggs-X, Lurk and Joseph K for the great info. I'm not sure that a Newegg store is around here. I'll check.

Apple just announced their new DUAL Quad Core machine (8 cores!). But, alas, I need PC.

About the kid that spent $1800 on a card: When Apple released the first color Macs (way before the PC even went color) I bought one of the first 32 bit graphic cards. It had either 2 or 4 MB of video RAM (I think 2) and had a breakout box that output in VGA, S-Video and Video. The card and box were $5500.00. Today you couldn't give away that card.

    • I'd spend more on some decent, fast memory (and a lot of it) and a good quick hard disk (actually, I'd RAID two for even better performance) then get a CPU that was quick but not some uber $1000 quad because that's quite possibly a little bit of a waste.

Same with the gfx card; X1950s crossfired is all very nice but quite possibly too bloated for your requirements.
