really the simple fact of it is your site needs a better sever because it's a good.

i think it's time to go dedicated

Nice one.. the problem is that a Dedicated Server costs money to pay and if I dont have the money, I dont have the server.

There might be someone who can help me about that though... you can find 3 huge posts of him here:

    • The main issue here is that generic hosting companies like Dream Host are configured to cram as many sites on to a server as possible. To do that they either use software that auto-kills processes that use what they consider to be too much resources, or they kick you off altogether.

That is why I am suggesting a Joomla only host that can be tuned for the demands of Joomla itself.

You need to be careful with dedicated servers; many companies sell cheap servers, but they are no more than racked no-name PC's held together with string.

A "real" server uses Xeon or Opteron CPU's, prefereably 2 or more, server standard RAM, and SCSI hard disks.

VPS are great in principle, but unless you get a high-end one you will run out of RAM for sure.

Adrian, what would it cost for a server, your recommended features, your cost for managing it and how many Joomla sites could you comfortably fit on it?

    • I really dont want to go into servers right now... I barely have any money and am more worried about never getting any advertisement or sponsors.

These are all somewhat academic questions right now because there are no formal proposals on the table.

The cost would be related to how many participants, how many sites, etc.

Storage and data transfer, erroneously known as "bandwidth" is never an issue these days, it is all about CPU's and most of all RAM.

The number of sites depends mostly on those 2 main factors, but 1000 sites on a properly managed server is quite reasonable.

My servers have RAID and also an additional hard disk off the RAID for automated backups; I also backup to remote storage systems by using scripts and crons etc.. I take backup very seriously.

I don't intend to sound evasive or vague but it really depends on what Andy has in mind, and I have contacted him about this already.

What I do know is that a Joomla only server would be be a great service to everyone here without question.

At first blush, Andy might very well consider this. You certainly sound like a credible individual. I'd like to see how this develops.

I thought the topic was that Dreamhost were slowing your site down? This would be the solution.

you say you don't have the money to pay for a server and they're too expensive.

but unless you're going to pay good money, you can't expect to get good performance.

you can't expect to run a site as big as your off a shared server that could be running thousands of other sites.

    • I have other threads relating to that..

"Best VPS Host", you might want to post a solution in there to please me :)

I have heard that Dedicated is almost exactly the same as VPS but just costs alot more money.. so why not get vps?

And while im saying this, which vps host and if I get one can any of you awesome and trusty friends help me set things up?
