"Best VPS Host", you might want to post a solution in there to please me :)

I have heard that Dedicated is almost exactly the same as VPS but just costs alot more money.. so why not get vps?

And while im saying this, which vps host and if I get one can any of you awesome and trusty friends help me set things up?

well you must have heard wrong

dedicated is going to give you boatloads more resources.. thats why it costs more.

well it depends on how fast your site is growing.

VPS is similar in as much you get full root access etc., but you are still sharing the CPU and RAM etc.. VPS usually start at 256MB guaranteed RAM which is not alot when you consider that out of that you have to account for all of your own services such as mySQL, DNS, mail, spam assassin, FTP etc..

So whatever is left after all those services are running is what you get for your sites.

If you choose that route I would be pleased to help you out.

      Best regards,

      Adrian.

It depends on what you are running.

If it is a single Joomla site, or two or three sites, depending on the traffic, then a suitably specified VPS will be fine; by that I mean base RAM of 512MB. It also depends if you are going to run spam assassin.

You could always start off with less and if the load is too high just ask them to upgrade it which they can do instantly.

Again though, if we had a server dedicated to Joomla, we wouldn't be having this conversation. There is nothing at all intrinsically wrong with shared hosting, it is just that conventional hosts are all about cramming as many sites as possible on to a server, and if anyone uses more resources they take action against them.

    • I thought most here would know my site as I made like 4 topics regarding it.

www.xboxuserspace.com , a MySpace alike site for Xbox Gamers which has gone wild since launch and is getting bigger and bigger by any second. The longer the bigger, in the summer I am hoping to reach the 25 000 users.

Yes I saw that; nice site :)

It isn't the users it is the traffic numbers; if you let me know what the traffic is and what you expect, I can give you a better idea.

Those numbers don't look right; 5137GB is over 5 Terrabytes which is more than a dedicated server has usually.

8GB traffic seems reasonable, although that is alot of traffic for a single site, but not particularly big in general terms.

It is the visitor numbers that matter because 8GB might mean alot of graphics, or a site that has MP3's for download etc.. Every visitor would create httpd and mysql processes, and it is them that start using CPU and RAM.
