Respond from Dreamhost to Slow Site Loading

Posted 17 years 9 months ago
    • Hello,
On Thu, 15 Feb 2007, you wrote:

My Site Xbox User Space ( www.xboxuserspace.com/ ) has become impossibly slow and sometimes takes up to 30 seconds to load.
My Webdesign was more than 1mb at first, but then I optimized it to just about 300kb and almost nothing has changed.
I have tried the design on a different server and it loads within 1-2 seconds.

I recently bought a Joomla Mambot which reduced alot of speed time for all Browsers, however that means I had to pay for it and it is still not loading properly.

I am considering moving to a vps host especially because I can't send over 500 emails an hour and the loading speed, but perhaps you can help me out with this so I won't have to move within these weeks or perhaps even months.

Unfortunately it looks like your website is using too much memory on our
shared hosting server and is getting killed automatically by our
automated process watching software. This could be due to a number of
reasons, the largest ones being poorly coded plugins and/or templates
that are used with pre-written software like WordPress, phpBB, Drupal,
      etc...

Checking into those first, to see if that's the cause. One of the best
ways to do this is to disable plugins one-by-one and load the website
each time in between. If you see it begin to consistently work after
      disabling one, you've found it!

Otherwise I'd recommend checking into the following wiki article, which
can help you identify and fix possible causes of high usage:

      wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Finding_Causes_of_Heavy_Usage

Sorry for the trouble that this has caused. Write back if I can do
      anything else for you.

      Thanks!
      Mike S

    • Do you have all those configured to appear on every section of your site?
I always wondered if selective "authoring" would help reduce the page mem required for pages that don't have the component or module selected to appear on.

    • eliminating some cb bots would be your best bet, but then cb is the core of your site isn't it?

time to start looking for an investor. You need enough $ for 1yr's dedicated hosting. After that, you're either getting by with advertising, or ...

What do you mean? Not every page loads the same, however they all take atleast this and that time so the differences on the speeds on different pages are either the images or content.Dan L wrote:

Luckily my site wouldnt need that much, but if CB would've had about 500 plugins, believe me I'd install all of them if they are good for my site.GollumX wrote:

What I am trying to get is a sponsor! I guess you guys could see how much time and money I am spending for this and how well it is becoming, however it is still very new so we are not very well-known yet.. wish there was someone who'd sponsor us for helping me make the site big. And if not, even the 2 huge Advertisement Areas on my site have barely been seen on adbrite.com yet..

Do you guys really think it's the problem stated by Dreamhost or Dreamhost itself.. I was considering moving to a VPS Server but I barely have any money remember :'(

    • It sounds to me that you might be expecting a Shared Hosing allotment to behave like a Dedicated Server. I don't think that DreamHost is the issue.

Many hosts, especially Hostgator will put you on a weeks notice for heavy resource usage. I host many ex-Hostgator sites.

Shared hosting is fine for static HTML sites, but as soon as you add mySQL to the equation respource usage goes way up; I know I have monitored it in real time.

A VPS is better, but many hosts are switching to SLM which aggressively kills processes; i.e. services using OOM, and they often don't restart. If they kill the name server you are off the air.

You need a minimum of 512MB of base RAM for mySQL based applications and that is cutting it fine.

    • You may not need to have all these things running to make the site work. In FireFox Web Developer, I found that some extensions were duplicating services. I also discovered that some extensions, while cool, were resource intensive that they were not worth it. I was able to cut my bandwidth to about half what it was by trimming image files, eliminating redundancies, and by discarding "lightbox."

This being said--you still need to look into a server!
