    • And that's exactly what we're trying to do. We spent a lot of time answering posts and countering misinformation on the forums, and also putting together the FAQ here:

honestly becasue no one explains the difference between open source, freeware and the like,,,, in peoples mind open source means freeware and freeware means free.. to a lot of people,, they dont know that the free in freeware means free source code. in peoples mind there is the MS people and all the software that supports it that is high end dollar and after that everything else is free,, it is what they have come to expect ( right or wrong,,it is the stigma of open source)

bashing the conceptions of the ignorant will not help,,,, perhaps if the community drafted a statement on the definition of these terms and each posted on thier sites it would turn the tide and change the attitudes..

      education is the key here.

    • I took CG's comment to be more ongoing, never ending "welcome to open source" basics.

Many of us who come in to projects are not already Linux geeks who know the difference in emphasis between free and open source software or know who Stallman and Raymond are. We've never read any Eben Moglen or seen his talks in video. Or, even what Lessig is doing with Creative Commons and liberating knowledge. Or, what community means and what "rights" people should expect or how decisions are made for a project.

That's the type of education that I think helps people better understand open source projects. It is a very different mindset than purchasing software as a customer. And yet, many walk into the forums with that "serve me" attitude and "the customer is always right" mentality that is energy robbing for contributors and leaves them frustrated.

When the core made the announcement last night and responded to 50 different question, that was impressive! It certainly clarified any possible misconception about the extensions. That was something I have never experienced before. Nothing quite like it. Thanks, Andy.

    • There has been topic started at Joomla Lounge forum that talks about using a "bridge" for 3rd party extensions.
      Any thoughts?

    • It is a viable alternative.

Bridge the admin interface, and put the site license in there and release the front end as gpl.

You could release the bridge as a general api and lgpl it, and that stops the viral nature of the GPL.

Hasn't been tested legally of course, but the throry is sound. Otherwise Every bridged app is in trouble. (It was stated int he Joomla faq that bridged products don't need to be GPL.)

    • With the new API in 1.5 I would think this would be even easier...not that writing a bridge is a trivial project.
Hope to see this idea grow into a workable solution.

    • Thanks Joseph, I will take that as a compliment. It was actually originally my idea. :D

(at least I suggested it first in the developers alliance forums)
