I'll just wondering what people's thoughts were on these two individual pieces of software? Fire board has now become Kunena and everybody is raving about it. However, PHPBB has been around for a long time and is arguably the most popular forum software. Obviously, Kunena is made to integrate with Joomla and can be installed within a few minutes. I know that there is a kind of bridge on this particular website that enables you to integrate phpbb with Joomla. I haven't actually carried out the full installation and yet, I have looked into it and it does seem quite complicated. Also, it doesn't integrate quite as well as Kunena. The developers are promising good things for Kunena and it seems to be a huge improvement on Fire board even though it looks virtually the same.
So at the end of the day, would you go for Kunena or phpBB?
Prim is right - you do want to avoid the 'bleeding edge' of development ... it usually leads to tears. Tried and true / slow and steady is the way to win the race (or you can just insert your favourite cliche here).
Having said that, I'm interested to see what Kunena looks like behind the pretty face and intend to give it a work out sometime shortly.
The RokBridge component is good stuff - so you won't have any problems with your user database ... and there are several modules available at the JED to bring content from your forums into your main Joomla website.
The most difficult thing you'll face is templating - unless you upgrade your membership here to include the phpBB3 template club, or hack a copy of your existing RT template to pieces to try and bridge that gap yourself. You could cheat and open your forums in a Joomla "wrapper" to circumvent this to an extent ... but I think this solution is clumsy at best.

I can add to that, it is going to cause you a lot of headaches too, Rokbridge is designed to work with native phpbb3, wrapping it within J! wil give problems

If I do go for the phpBB forum, I'm not going to mess around, I will go to one of the forum templates, that's obviously the way to go and should make life a lot easier.

True! See you on the other side :cheesy:

This may sound like a really stupid question, but I assume I can install the default phpBB forum and then apply the template for it at a later date? I just didn't know whether your templates are a full installation.
Sorry, another silly question. Before installing phpBB, do I have to manually create the folder for it to go in? And also create another database, or can I use the same database as Joomla, i.e. same password username and database?
For example install the phpBB3 forum into <Joomla Directory>/phpbb3
