    • Standards??? M$ Internet Exploder per-version 6? Standards???

Sorry, lost weeks of productivity... trying to maintain backwards and forward compatible computability have jaded my viewpoint more than just a bit.

The issue is difficult and complex, but IMHO comes down to standards hostile planned obsolescence "features," that keep users on an endless upgrade treadmill. I paid good money ($50) for my copy of Windows 2000, that I still use everyday. I am not allowed to "upgrade" to internet exploder 7. Since I find the license terms that accompany Windows XP, and all it's successors, morally and legally objectionable (I think I'm in good company here.) Not to mention the $140 lease for an otherwise fine product that is being replaced by yet more examples of insecure and inefficient code bloat. A failed business model, (even Mr. Gates has jumped ship) of periodically taking a hatchet to last years still functional os model, in order to sell next years messy untimely birth of security holes and brokenness, thankfully will soon pass. Kubuntu baby! VM Ware, here I come. In the meanwhile I will do my best to keep the needs of the customer and end users at the forefront of all my efforts, while attempting to isolate them from abuse at the hands of the megacorp as much as possible. • Hold on people, if ya read my previous statements - I said we need to maintain Standards and that IE doesn't maintain standards, because IE sucks Monkey (censored).

I didn't say IE has any kind of standards at all, I said the opposite and that is why I despise IE.

Again, like I said - IE sucks Monkey (censored) and people need to drop it like a bad habit. LOL :P

    • Yep. A Veritable Vortex of Monkey Appendages. M$ Internet Exploder is borken, in every per-version of it. Not just 6, which was one of the worst (six is for 6 layers of boxes inside boxes, sometimes to just sorta make it almost work.). It is designed that way, borken, brocken, broken.

None the less, I still design for somewhat hopefully graceful degradation. Just because Micro$oft abuses their customers, doesn't mean that I have to go along for the ride. I'm not faulting the wonderful folks at RocketTheme who have done a great job with the mess that the landmine ridden web "standards" landscape is today. I'm just being careful to keep in mind who did it to us.

:cheesy: BTW-Thanks for all the wonderful templates. You folks make my difficult jobs easier every day.

    • A 'WORKING' IE6 Work-Around!

With RocketTheme's announcement that they will not develop/support IE6 effective with January 2010, I needed to fast-tract my WORKING work-around in preparation of their January '10 template release. Knowing that when this date was upon us the IE6 world was not going to fall to their knees just because RT stopped supporting this browser. Yes, it is a start but my clients and their customers could care less. I needed a solution... fast!

With this knowledge (and dealing with other Joomla template clubs that have already my this change-over) I have spent the last month developing a system through template code adjustments and a splash of redirect software and commands to accomplish this task.

      To view what I have done, go to this web link using the current version of FireFox;

      www.team4100.com/RT - SORRY DEAD LINK

The home page is the most recent (July '09) RT template release. It was installed using their RocketLauncher and then I added their basic Meridian (March '09) template. So for all who still have IE6, go to the URL above. If you do a side-by-side view of this URL using FF & IE6 you'll see that FF brings up the current Affinity template and with IE6 you'll see the Meridian template. Both share the same data (Affinity installed sample data) yet both function as separate stand-alone installs (menus, css, styles, etc.).

At first I was just using the standard, '?template='TemplateName' command but this only worked for the home page. Any menu click would take you back to the Affinity template and this was not going to be a suitable work-around. I struggled with this for some time until I found the perfect combination of soft and hard code commands. Once I got the redirect working 100% of the time, I then went into the Meridian template code (index.php & template.css) and changed the module position names for 'showcase' to 'ie6showcase', 'showcase2' to 'ie6showcase2' and 'showcase3' to 'ie6showcase3. Brought over the Meridian FP Showcase data and applied it to RokCandy and assigned it to the ie6showcase module position. As you can see, I'm able to have the best of both worlds all with one common Joomla install. Now with RT making the move not to support IE6, I'm more then ready to keep my client's happy because ALL of their web customers can see and access the same data without them having to maintain and pay for two separate Joomla installations.

Is this a perfect and easy work-around? Not at all! It took time and a great deal of trial and error to get it working. But the end result is that it's working!

p.s. the only problem I experienced was with RT's new READON code. For now this is just a minor problem.

    • With RocketTheme's announcement that they will not develop/support IE6 effective with January 2009

ie6 is still supported in new releases until January 2010?

Vista is actually a very secure O/S, when compared to XP which is a sub version of 2000. Using Kubuntu for designing, is like having a disability(and yes i have one).

    • No need to panic here guys. Unless you are already planning on changing your template over to the design for January 1st, 2010, you really don't even need to worry about this. If you have a site set up and like one of the nearly 100 templates available here that do support IE6...then your site will support IE6.

You can even use that template that works for IE6 until Jan. 1st, 2011, or EVEN 2012. I'm sure RocketTheme will let you.

All this announcement is really about is that RocketTheme is ready to move forward and can do a heck of a lot more without the IE6 headache...and they are giving a significant amount of time to gradually move towards that "landmark in time", hahaha.

But honestly, this isn't anything like Y2K where the world blew up, this is just what's called moving forward. And as for everything that is already in place, nothing is going to break and nothing is going to become unusable just because of RocketTheme's decision.

    • Brian,

You are 100% correct in everything you posted... 100%! My personal thinking was to be 'proactive' with this whole process and not 'reactive'. I have three clients due for a complete website face-lift in the next 6 to 8 months and felt the need to be ready in the very likely event they choose an RT theme released after January '10. I know this based on the advancements RT made in design and functionality once they moved away from Joomla 1.0x. So, please forgive me for sounding as if the sky was going to fall and life as we once knew it would end come Jan. '10. And maybe, just maybe when these three clients choose their next perfect RT template... IE6 will be a distant memory and a topic of conversation over cocktails. Yet we can only dream of such a day for now when better then 30% of their internet business comes from IE6 browsers. With the code I've tossed together I'm now ready, so bring it on!!!
