RocketTheme focusing on Joomla! 1.5 in 2009

    • Hey Robert,

Not sure if you frequent our blog but you may wish to check out rocketwerx.com/blog - I am referring to the 3 parts elaborating upon RocketTheme Version 2 which has been discussed extensively in the forums for many many months. We are getting ready, as stated in the blog posts, to move to 1.5 completely - a completely new design, completely new components, completely new system...all on Joomla 1.5.

Just to repeat, there will be no new 1.0 templates, only 1.5 templates. However, support for the 1.0 templates is not being ceased, it will continue as always.

    • This is all a mute point...next year - extensions for 1.5 will rival 1.0. I've already seen the improvement in extensions and also, seen some really cool extensions that now exist and made possible because of 1.5.

The people that don't want to switch (which is a really silly statement by the way, cause your not switching, your upgrading) are people who will kick, cry and scream all the time about anything, because they could easily use both 1.0 and 1.5, but instead they make the STANCE OF -

"I AM NOT GOING TO USE 1.5 - YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!" (They sound like little 3 year olds - I use both 1.0 and 1.5 and am glad for 1.5)

Clearly they don't understand that - no one is making them - the software is being upgraded as a natural progression of things. They can kick and scream like a three year old, but sorry the software is going to advance and they cannot stop it.

I have yet to hear one legitimate argument as to why Joomla should stop advancing for their sake, because when push comes to shove - that is what they are saying -

"STOP -DEVELOPMENT OF JOOMLA AND ITS PROGRESSION OF IMPROVING UPON ITSELF FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL."

So, I say "Rock On RT and thanks for supporting the progression, development and further advancement of Joomla!" ;) :D

Edit: Did you not notice that Joomla split to begin with???? You should of taken the time to learn 1.5 during that time (but wait you still have a little time) and also realized that 1.0 would soon be obsolete. I just got one thing to say to those who didn't catch on - "DEE DEE DEE" :P There my final argument.

    • "I've not found one componant that is worth forcing me to migrate a couple years of data over to 1.5..."

Well, i don't know what kind of extensions you need that only works on 1.0. There's coming some really cool stuff that is only working on Joomla 1.5 (afaik) like JomSocial...

Also, you should consider to upgrade since the Joomla support for 1.0x will soon be discontinued so you will not get any new security updates and so on.

"I have to ask myself... if 1.5 is so much better, and so much more feature rich, why has Rocket Theme not upgraded it's own then as well? They are expecting their own customers to migrate if they wish to use any new templates... "

RT v2 will be around soon. Hopefully by the end of the year :)

      Hey James...

Nope... don't even read the forums that much - just pop in when there is the very occasional issue with a template that a client has purchased from you guys and have me working on customizing... I personally don't see what the name calling from your other members here is all about when someone expresses an opinon though... to be called a Baby because I feel that 1.0 is just fine and does the job for every site that I administrate is nothing more than a good reason why NOT pop in and discuss anything here... been programming Joomla for a couple of years, even developed a couple of custom componants for both 1.0 AND 1.5... and just don't see the super human benefit of dealing with all the migration messes that I've seen people go through when they have sites that have been on 1.0 for 2+ years, and try to migrate over --- losign functionality from the extensions and componants that they have been using for years that don't migrate properly...

I had an enjoyable run here recommending RT, and if I have clients that decide to use 1.5, I'll recommend, but for me, there just isn't a reason to continue... that's all... Again, I am sorry to see the development for 1.0 templates stop... and am glad I noticed this before I renewed... I only come to the site if I absolutely positively have to... in fact, I almost missed it since I only stopped in to see what the new template looked like and renew my subscription...

Now I get lambasted and called a Baby because I have no reason to upgrade? Security updates are not the reason, if you know what you are doing, security updates can be fixed yourself... and if you are not a lazy admin relying on third parties to harden your installations, then what's the need anyhow? Right? If it ain't broke, why fix it? Haven't had a single problem with 1.0, and not found any componant that I need... If I need something, I write it myself... it's not exactly rocket science programming mods and componants for Joomla... (Excuse the possible pun in that...)

Who knows, if I ever came across something that I could ONLY do with 1.5 and I absolutely have to use it, then maybe I'll go through the trouble... All I wanted to say was that I was disappointed to know that no new 1.0 templates will come out of Rocket Theme... Excuse me for saying I was sorry to hear that...

    • Could we please keep all comments civil, polite and on-topic? :) The thread is about our (RocketTheme's) movement to 1.5 in January, the General Discussion board would be much better to discuss the pros and cons of 1.0 and 1.5.

A little clarification on a few points for those who like to skim read :)

      1. 1.0 templates are no longer being created by us
      2. Forum support for 1.0 templates will continue
      3. All new templates will be for Joomla 1.5
      4. RocketTheme is moving to 1.5 ourselves within the coming month, hopefully

    • From the outside joomla 1.5 doesn't look like a huge change from 1.0, even the features don't seem that different. This was done primarily to lesson the impact to existing 1.0 users. However under the covers it's very different and the new framework upon which it is based allows joomla 1.6 and future versions to have dramatic new features that were simply impractical with the 1.0 codebase. Also there are many minor and functional improvements to the whole joomla experience that once you've gotten used to them, make using 1.0 seem so archaic.

I've been working on RTv2 based on 1.5 since 1.5 was in it's very first beta iterations. Only the complexity of moving an entire functioning business from one platform to another has caused the process to take so long. We've been using 1.5 for well over a year and frankly it's a VAST improvement on 1.0. They are such leagues apart it's not even worth comparing.

The Joomla problem is the problem faced by any company/organization/group that develops a product that is very successful. It becomes popular and then becomes entrenched. It becomes very hard to improve that product and move foward because of your large user-base and their aversion to changing something that already works well for them. There are many many limitations and issues with joomla 1.0 but the fact of the matter is that it solves 90% of people's problems, it's been around for years, so why change?

I think you can look to other products such as Microsoft Windows to see the parallel. Windows XP was such a huge success and pretty much did what people wanted so now MS has problems getting people to move to Vista. Even tho under the hood there are good security and feature improvements in Vista. Why change? XP works, and Vista looks pretty much the same. The problem is that when you don't move, it just holds up future development an advancements. Take another MS example that hits closer to home. Internet Explorer 6. IE6 is the bane of any web designers existence becuase it's very buggy and doesn't support modern technologies like alpha transparent pngs (cough). Why is it still a problem after all these years, and IE7 out there, and IE8 on the horizon? Because it 'works', mostly, and developers keep supporting it. Because it's popular we have to keep having to make sure it continues to be supported. What's the incentive to update, when everyone does this? If 50% of the websites you visited didn't work right with your browser, and they kept telling you it could be fixed with a free update, you would probably just update right? It would be so easy to get rid of IE6 if everyone banded together and did this. Or better yet, if MS forced an IE7 or IE8 upgrade on all XP users. This is how template designers feel about Joomla 1.0 but not to such a great degree. It's limiting, it has awful XHTML output, and we can't do anything about it.

Joomla is the same way. If you don't update your clients, your going to be left behind. Joomla is not stopping development. If your not on 1.5 when 1.6 comes out, then your not going to be able to easily upgrade to 1.6. 1.6 uses the same framework as 1.5. 1.6 will have no 1.0->1.6 migration, only 1.5->1.6. Joomla has made it clear that they will only support current-1 versions, so when 1.6 comes out, there will be no further support for 1.0. We've been waiting until our numbers told us that the vast majority of our users were using 1.5. Other template clubs have already made this move, some without any real notice to their user base, 1.0 users still have the choice of nearly 80 templates that will continue to work with 1.0, but we have to look to the future and that future is Joomla 1.5 and 1.6. When we stop support for new 1.0 templates next month it will mean we can have new configuration options, we can override output that is 5 years out of date, we can make blogs look attractive, provide better output for some of the built-in joomla functionality etc. This is going to make your sites look better, perform better, layout better, etc.

These are the some of the reasons we are moving to 1.5 only template development. I didn't even get into the extensions capabilities in 1.5, which will allow things like our long awaited RokTabs release. These are not possible in 1.0 period, so supporting 1.5 only will allow us to provide more stuff not less.

      Cheers!

Robert I don't think your a baby and your writing and post are intelligent. Overall - if you read some of the post in here...it's amazing, the logic behind them, which I don't personally understand the logic of where "progression is a bad thing".

As for your point of migrating a major site - oy vay - I can imagine the nightmares, but as to the extensions falling behind - that is not Joomla - that is third party developers.

Heck, I had a component I loved in 1.0 but by the second year of using it the developers dropped it and did not continue support or develop it anymore - it did not work when I upgraded 1.0 doing normal upgrades. So, I don't see that as a failure of Joomla, but a natural progression of survival of the fittest.

So, in reference to the baby remark - I am just a goof ball. So, consider the source. ;) Fill free to bust my b*lls back if it makes you feel better.

      Peace Out,

    • Hmm, about terminating 1.0 joomla Rocket templates, my opinion is this, less work for the same money...
      ;)
I think that joomla 1.0 still has potential despite of great features of 1.5 version.
I saw post here, somwhere, about, how can you install for your client an
older version and that version is on near end of life...
This a little bit patetic to me, or snobish, because building web sites is not depending of some versions, depends
      on your skill and responsibility.
There is nothing wrong with 1.0, specially if we taking about Rocket Launcher install, in which I have confidence with security
      issues.
So, good luck with 1.5 and all great features (and issues) whose coming with...
      and good bye
