    • Joomla just announced the 'end of life' for J1.0, too...think in July, all comes to an end. :)

One would only have to look at the new (and improved) extensions being developed for J1.5 native only...while some old J1.0 are being brought up to speed, development of new J1.0 extensions is becoming extinct....the future looks bright!

    • Gollum said it best --- 1.5 is a much better platform, and I know this concern was also expressed by the main man himself, but unfortunately will the extensions and the most ideal ones such as SEYRET and FIREBOARD be available on time, and if not will there still be an option to run in LEGACY?

The fact that a lot of great extensions that are beneficial to this CMS platform, mainly work for 1.0 is a downer. I am glad RT is taking it to the next level for 2009, as it should, now only if everyone else building for these templates could do the same would be ideal.

    • you're a web designer and still putting your clients on 1.0, then you're doing wrong by them.
I agree with Mack. Drop it and put even more (how could that be possible if I look at Versatility 4!) attention to Joomla 1.5 and Rocket Werx.

I installed CB 1.2 RC 3 and it is running well and native on Joomla! 1.5.7

    • What a lot of J1.5 fanboys out there...

Joomla 1.5 series would be a real step forward, if:

+ if it had any templates available for it (there are probably about 5,000 out there for Joomla 1.0 - how many for 1.5?)
+ if it had any extensions for it
+ if the extensions that are supposed to be native 1.5 actually worked and weren't a total nightmare to install in some cases
+ if the code layout had been fixed instead of still being based on a Stone Age layout
+ if it wasn't still being hacked
+ if there were any advantage to using it, for the users

There are hardly any advantages to webmasters and about a hundred serious disadvantages.

There is no way it works right as yet, all the extensions have to be there, and they all have to be able to work native and be installed without major headache. I get 5 or 6 people a day ask me how to install some of them, they just crash straight away. Is this how a stable CMS is supposed to function??

The main advantage I can see is that you can create a tableless layout, with all the big advantages that has, using the template overrides in J1.5. OK, so that's a big plus. Something that has been missing in a big way from RT templates, and where others have taken advantage and moved ahead.
i]edit: even though it was probably Andy that designed that facility in the first place...... man, that's rich :) [/i

It's true that because of this, other less-skilled template designers have been mopping up the template sales. I respect Andy's decision to move on, purely from this angle - he just had to do it. It's that or create two totally different templates each month.

Luckily we've got enough Joomla 1.0 templates to be going on with - about 5,000 should be enough I reckon.

But I'll be doing what smart Windows users are doing with regard to Vista - forget it. Keep with XP till the next version comes out; a new OS like Vista takes years before it's usable.

Same for Joomla 1.5. We'll be ignoring that and waiting for Joomla 2.0, with its fully-corrected code layout. Much better idea - why do extended beta testing on a new CMS version that won't be a practical proposition for years? That's all that J1.5 users are doing. Takes a minimum of 3 years to sort out a CMS, same as for an OS.

      Wait for J2.0.

So as far as RT is concerned - I thoroughly understand. Can't argue. Go ahead. But for me, I'll be waiting for 2.0.

      ;D

    • As regards yet another controversial subject - IE6 - the problem is that some websites get a very large amount of IE6 visits. We manage a couple of sites with 45 - 49% IE6 users when measured 6 months ago. Maybe it's changed now. Perhaps only 33%.

The trouble is that there are so many novice web users locked into IE6: juniors, seniors, and corporate users especially. They can't change, and blocking them out won't help the sales on the sites where this is a factor. Please try to remember commercial reality. Some users are Firefox / Google Apps / Vista Ultimate users, or whatever - but some are seniors with old kit, maybe even out in the sticks and with dial-up.

They are buyers so we cater for them. Morally, even if they weren't, we should still consider them.

You might think the idea of just building sites for people with Firefox 4 and 22" Plasma screens is just fine, but personally I believe in web usability for all. To me, accessibility is a serious issue, not some kind of joke. Sure, build cutting-edge sites, why not. But please don't build every site like that, not everyone is aged 16 - 40, has 8MB DSL, a 22" flat panel, a twin-CPU machine, and a lot of dough to splash on IT. Be realistic.

I know many of you just consider accessibility (and usability) as just some sort of pathetic joke that stops you from building mega feature sites, but I don't take that view. It's OK for specialist sites like gamers. I seriously object when people tell me the web is for young, rich gamers.

    • chris: This discussion is about Joomla! 1.5 and not IE6 :)

I agree on your post though, even if i hate IE6 myself :P

    • Point taken Sir.

Only included as it seems to go hand in hand with the general move forward, ie marginalising existing or older technology. Like you I hate the darn thing, no one in their right mind would use it - but many web users don't have the benefit of that knowledge. They just believe what MS tells them.

    • ...though a strong argument can also be made to stop appeasing this segment of the browsing world; were they to suddlenly find themselves unable to view half of the Internet, perhaps these people (i.e., companies, individuals, people, my IT guys in the federal government, et al) would upgrade and let bygones be bygones. ;)

Once IE8 stable releases, do you think MS will make an end-of-life announcement?

    • Even Microsoft themselves must be sick of dealing with the limitations of IE6. Anyway, although it would be nice, we've made no announcement, nor have we any intention of stopping IE6 support here at RocketTheme.

    • I have to say that, even though I hate IE6, a lot of my sites' members are forced by their employers to still use IE6 - government departments here are always the last to move to the modern world! :D
