    • We migrated to XP (finally) in D.C., and they still went with IE6...it's so much more secure, they said. ;)

    • I greatly agree to stop developing template for joomla 1.0
It's good and normal to keep the support for existing template and for people who are using it on a live/production site. When you see the benefits and improvement of version 1.5, you have to be foolish to dev new site on 1.0 framework, no?

as for the IE6 issue, yes it's always the large corporation or government that are still stock with IE6. Most of the time it comes from their IT/tech support department who are most of the time people with a big fat paycheck doing almost nothing all day long.
It's better for them to stick to one set-up and not change anything around for as long as they can so it gives them less work to do and more time playing games or reading news on the internet.
I personally know someone working in a major corporation who explained me their unofficial policy.

since they obviously can't say that it's for a security reason that they keep using IE6, i wonder what else is the motivation behind this beside laziness.

i think that if most web developer in the world move to the direction of not supporting IE6 anymore we have chances to see it disappear for good. but it would need to be a joint effort for this to work.

Maybe someone should start a "web developer union" or something like that. :P :P :P :P

I am going all out with a new site (Nov. 24 2008) that will include a campaign to have all users "Get FireFox" to view this site. They cannot even log into the site if they have IE6. Basically, going to pay them (reward them) with prizes and gifts to switch FireFox (plus I will mock anyone who uses IE6).

This means - a small town of 5,000 (plus 20,000 surrounding rural area) who are so backward ass when it comes to computers, but they still use them and that is all that counts, I will run a campaign to "Get FireFox". Yeah, it will be a pain, but not as bad as dealing with IE6.

I will never waste my time supporting IE6 again.

I wanted to start a "No Mercy For Idiots" campaign for people who are - well, idiots. Campaign would include -

      -Updating Browser
      -Updating Your OS
      -Stopping Spam
& an assortment of other things.

So, I agree 100% on getting rid of IE6...

Mean while back at the farm...

      V4 Rocks!!!!! ;D

What a lot of J1.5 fanboys out there...

Joomla 1.5 series would be a real step forward, if:

+ if it had any templates available for it (there are probably about 5,000 out there for Joomla 1.0 - how many for 1.5?)
+ if it had any extensions for it
+ if the extensions that are supposed to be native 1.5 actually worked and weren't a total nightmare to install in some cases
+ if the code layout had been fixed instead of still being based on a Stone Age layout
+ if it wasn't still being hacked
+ if there were any advantage to using it, for the users

There are hardly any advantages to webmasters and about a hundred serious disadvantages.

There is no way it works right as yet, all the extensions have to be there, and they all have to be able to work native and be installed without major headache. I get 5 or 6 people a day ask me how to install some of them, they just crash straight away. Is this how a stable CMS is supposed to function??

The main advantage I can see is that you can create a tableless layout, with all the big advantages that has, using the template overrides in J1.5. OK, so that's a big plus. Something that has been missing in a big way from RT templates, and where others have taken advantage and moved ahead.
i]edit: even though it was probably Andy that designed that facility in the first place...... man, that's rich :) [/i

It's true that because of this, other less-skilled template designers have been mopping up the template sales. I respect Andy's decision to move on, purely from this angle - he just had to do it. It's that or create two totally different templates each month.

Luckily we've got enough Joomla 1.0 templates to be going on with - about 5,000 should be enough I reckon.

But I'll be doing what smart Windows users are doing with regard to Vista - forget it. Keep with XP till the next version comes out; a new OS like Vista takes years before it's usable.

Same for Joomla 1.5. We'll be ignoring that and waiting for Joomla 2.0, with its fully-corrected code layout. Much better idea - why do extended beta testing on a new CMS version that won't be a practical proposition for years? That's all that J1.5 users are doing. Takes a minimum of 3 years to sort out a CMS, same as for an OS.

      Wait for J2.0.

So as far as RT is concerned - I thoroughly understand. Can't argue. Go ahead. But for me, I'll be waiting for 2.0.

      ;D
that also makes scene .. so yea i will keep using joomla 1.0x
      or not !
i dont really know hehe i think i have to test joomla 1.5 myself ..

    • yeah would love to see more and advanced 1.5 templates but by any changes is it possible that templates run good on all version of IE specific IE 6. As joomla 1.0 or 1.5 is webmaster issue, he can change but you cannot ask ppl around the globe to switch to IE 7 or some other browsers. My website is suffering a lot due to this IE6 issues.

    • The wingman: please let us know when it will be up. i will gladly support the effort and promote your page. do you have any beta version for now?

Anuj Agarwal: it's like many things in this world. Can you oblige people to stop smoking or drinking alcohol (which kill as much people if not more than smoking)? No, but lots of campaign around the world are made. we even ban smoking in public places.
in a way banning support for IE6 helps to us, web developer, to remain sane and not loose our hair !!!

why people upgraded from XP service pack 1 to SP2 or SP3 and so on? mainly for security reason, right? well for IE6 there is not only a design issue but also a security issue.

So, as The wingman like to call them (and i agree with him), idiots that are not keeping up with updates, and increase the chances of having virus or trojan or what ever nasty things, could eventually affect you/us in some way.

Even Micro#%$^@ made the updates from IE6 to IE7 available without the need to check if your OS install was genuine. To me that says it all. do you really think they care about web developer? no it's because the more people stick to IE6 the more they will have to come up with patch and additional service pack.

Even though i am pro Firefox, i always suggest people around me or clients to at least upgrade to IE7 if they are too scared to switch to FF. which i don't understand why they would, but a lot of people are afraid of changes even tiny ones when it comes to their computer.

anyways, we can go on and on. so "GO THE WINGMAN ... GO !!!!!" :)

      cheers

    • well, I'm not using Joomla! 1.5 for a live or production sites I mean not yet, I've been playing around with Joomla! 1.5 and some RT-Themes for Joomla! 1.5, so what I'm saying is that the time of Jan-09 to stop doing Joomla! 1.0.+, templates is a good time, that way I can learn more about Joomla! 1.5 and the Joomla! 15 Templates for a better client support....

    • I know this may be a dumb question so I appreciate your patience in advance.

This news makes me a little nervous but, I've been thinking about jumping to 1.5 but I was not sure if all the great components that are out there would work with the New 1.5 .

Do the majority of the components and modules work with 1.5? Jcal, Docman, Seyret Video, Podcast, Fireboard Forums, Datso Gallery and others.

      Thank you
