I opted to go with a VPS solution as I wanted complete control over my server as I also host DNS, e-mail domains and other types of servers on my setup.

I went with ServInt and I am very pleased with the service, performance and uptime. The tech support is TOP notch and very responsive.

"With a VPS, you get your own secure hosting environment, complete with root access, and the ability to install and configure whatever you desire within your environment."

They use CentOS 4 Linux Operating System with free Plesk 8.0 or Cpanel that run on Virtuozzo, IMO the best Virtual server platform for Linux.

If you opt to go with them please comment when you sign up I referred you. :)

Thanks Joseph, i have just signed up with servint (VPS Ultimate for now). They have ben great so far. Sales team are great, and very accommodating of my requests.

Note:This is not a recommendation of servint. I will post back in two or three months with my experience. However, i have a good feeling about them.

GollumX: If there is some benefit that goes to your existing users for referring me to you, please extend that benefit to Joseph Halleck.
Servint: I have made note of your forum referral and will be providing Joseph Halleck with referral credit as thanks for the information he provided to you.

    • I went for a Servint VPS after a serious of unfortunate events (One day I'll write a LONG book about them) with <ahem> "A major US based host". It was a shared server and almost sent me out of business.

Servint support is lightning fast - BUT - I have found it a bit brief. I feel like they are saying 'you should know this already, but....'

I have had the account for a couple of months but have not had one successful migration yet to be honest.

Today I am trying to get my head around suEXEC PHP5 handler (dso or cgi) as it's not possible to develop a joomla site with the current setup. (Long story, involves file permissions/ownership).

So, although in theory it is a managed service, just be aware you do need quite a bit of technical knowledge of servers and the like.

Hopefully when I finally get it all worked out and configured properly all will be sweet...

    • A dedicated server or VPS is the only way to go in my opinion. You know then that your sites are insulated from the actions of who knows who else on the server doing who knows what.

Also I could not even think of a server where I did not have root access - it would be like a car without a driver.

But yes, these hosting companies do assume a decent level of Linux because they get so many people dabbling with the command line without knowing what they are doing. I have been using UNIX/Linux in its various flavours for years, so don't even think about it.

Securing the server is absolutely crucial, and that means as a minimum moving ssh to a different port and disabling root access altogether. A robust modsec is also crucial at http level.

My advice would be to rent a basic Linux server somewhere - costs a few dollars per month without all the cPanel stuff - and put aside a few weeks to learn Linux inside out, and then get a VPS or dedicated.

I have dedicateds and VPS's and for most people a VPS is fine providing it is a high spec one. Don't get a "starter" VPS because their is not enough RAM to run the site properly - youwant one that burts to over 1GB as an absolute minimum.

Its this sort of stuff that scares the bejesus out of me. Im on shared hosting, its not bad but I need some room to breathe. Not knowing one side of a server to the other I think im out of my depth with a VPS.

Is there something in between VPS and shared.?

At its most basic level you would see no difference between shared hosting and a VPS - both run WHM/cPanel.

If you get a fully managed service they will admin the VPS as well to a point as well as secure it.

Of course your VPS is totally isolated from other websites, so no other user can interfere with your sites which is a major plus.

A VPS is worth having for those reasons alone.

For me Linux root access is absolutely crucial. I do all my own admin, as well as create cron jobs to backup sites and move the backups, mySQL from the command line etc. One of the most useful things is managing permissions etc. Joomla 1.5 has an FTP layer so it isn't so much of an issue, but Joomla 1.0 needed almost all the directory permissions changing - unless you install it with Fantastico which I don't. Moving blocks of data around must be done from the command line.

Also with root access you can transfer very large sites between servers. The basic WHM transfer using account details is limited by website size. I once moved nearly 2000 websites - some very large - not all mine- they were hosted - between server on the opposite side of the US - that would have been impossible without root access.

So in summary getting a VPS is a no brainer. What you do with it after that is up to you.

    • Yes Joe, agreed, my Servint VPS is a good service with (so far) 100% uptime and very fast support.

My point, picked up by Wayne above, is that it is NOT simple to setup and administer if you do not have some server admin skills.

Adrian obviously has used operating systems a lot and is ok with them, but it's my guess that most folks grow from shared hosting, where your hand is held tightly, to a VPS where you are expected to at least know the basics of server admin.
Sadly, pressures of business mean that there's no way I can "put aside a few weeks to learn Linux inside out" and I don't think I'm alone there.

Just to reiterate, the support is extremely fast; if you ask them to do something, they'll do it very quickly.
If you ask them *what* you need to do, the answers are a bit light on detail.

For example take this recent exchange (I've paraphrased it a bit):

Me: I am trying to CHMOD a file (to 755), but fails, have tried via cPanel and ftp and Joomla backend ?

SERVINT (within 5 minutes): This has been done as requested.

Me: Thanks, please could you change it to 777 and also, why can't I CHMOD these files myself ?

SERVINT(within 3 minutes): This has been done as requested. You can't change it because the ownership is by the 'nobody' account.

Me: Thank you, do you know why the ownership is set to 'nobody' ?

SERVINT(within 8 minutes): This usually happens when you transfer files through http as opposed to ftp.

I hope that demonstrates my point, efficient but not overly helpful. I know my old shared server support team would probably have given all that information in the first reply.

    • Have them install SuExec and say bye to the permission issues. Also, I would add Configserver in order to protect your VPS better.
