    • Thanks Joe I will ask them for SuExec & Configserver.

You've also perfectly illustrated my point; why didn't Servint suggest those things during the exchange above ?

What time of day was it? :)
You might want to ask Reed (the owner) at ServInt that question and I am sure he would address it promptly.

I use Plesk on my setup and might be a better choice for you to manage your server.
The new version works well and the tools are easy to use.

I also setup my sites to allow SFTP and Secure Shell so I can do Linux command line as needed. Using WinSCP and Putty (both free) I can handle any issue that comes up and if needed you can always fall back on ServInt support.

    • Ok im sure there would be tuts out there, and seeing that its a good idea to get WinSCP and Putty, & SuExec & Configserver.

How long is this list of things one needs to know and install? , or ask as seems the case with ServInt

A top ten will do guys...;)

    • Just an update on my experiences with Servint:
I'm getting more of the same; lots of problems and curt, unhelpful answers.

Still none of the sites are 100% successful so I'm starting to make plans to back out the sites I've moved there and go back to shared hosting.

Beware of Servint - only for those with lots of server admin knowledge.

    • I am really surprised to hear this.
Did you contact the owner Reed about your experiences?

Reed is not one to take this type of thing lightly.

    • No, I seem to get someone called Jorge C. I'm in Australia, maybe the overnight staff are not so good ?

The current situation I have is that I have to raise a support ticket for each file I need to CHMOD, sure it's done quickly but it's far from ideal.

Also, no emails from any of my sites on SERVINT get through to my email address.
The problem, I think, is that my VPS has a similar name to my url (hosted elsewhere).

I'm aware this is the RT forum, not Servint so I'll go over there and try my luck :-)

Just wanted to make sure Wayne and any others considering Sevint are warned.

    • The FTP layer in J! 1.5 makes file permissions easier to manage, but with J! 1.x command line made things much easier for all those permissions that need changing to make files writable etc. And the times I have needed to modify files from the command line.

Also with a VPS you can secure it properly - Power VPS will do that for you - and with any php/mySQL app security is crucial.

As I said, Power VPS are the host to go to - they specialise exclusively in VPS and are probably one of the biggest if not the biggest dedicated VPS host around. I am not promoting them - just saving you guys alot of hassle in future. Hosting is definitely not something you want to compromise on or save a couple of dollars per month. If you have a serious site, get serious hosting

    • Hi guys, I thought I'd update this thread for those following it.

We have just migrated all our sites OFF the Servint server and back to our previous Shared Server then cancelled our Servint account.

In fact due to work pressures we had to pay a contractor to help the migration.

The Servint VPS was never properly configured (well, *something* was wrong I can't pin it down).
For example we received a warning about failed emails/missing A record every day.
Every day we went through the process to add the A record but it never worked.

Anyway, we're out of there now.
Reckon it's cost upwards of $400 for this experiment, plus countless hours of hassle.

Now I must say clearly: the server never went down, performance was fast and support tickets were quickly actioned.
The major problem is as discussed in this thread, basically that this service is for skilled server techies and NOT for the average guy/girl.

I'll namecheck the shared hosts who we've returned to: HostDime.
It's a less than perfect service, we do have occaisional downtime and a recent upgrade to PHP5 caused a large amount of chaos with our Joomla sites.
But we just have more confidence that they CARE about us.

      Better the devil you know....

      Cheers,
      Paul.

    • Thanks for sharing your experiences Paul. If you were influenced to try Servint based specifically on my recommendations early in this thread, I offer you my sincere apologies for having cost you money. :(
