Thanks for starting this thread Dave - Ill be keeping an eye on it. Seems like there are a few of us in the same boat. Would be great if Andy opened a Rocket Theme Hosting Company for members specializing in Joomla Hosting. I am sure he would pick up thousands of clients from the get go. Me being one.

It's not like he has anything else to do :P

I have been in the hosting business for 16 years and now host sites for several really big Internet marketers.

If there is a demand I would be happy to create a Rocket Theme only hosting service and optimize the server accordingly.

Over the last 12 months alone I have managed over 4000 sites.

      Hi Adrian,

Wow, that's a lot of sites! Do you host your own sites?

      dave

Yes I do. I control 4 servers currently so I have plenty of choice :)

I don't mess about with Pentium 4 CPU's and IDE hard disks either; those are nothing more than PC's in a rack; I use multiple Xeon CPU's and RAID storage.

Hosting is the life-blood of a web site, especially a commercial one; so why introduce weak links?

      Great, Adrian,

How much would shared hosting cost for 20 persons interested - a basic package, that is?

I don't want to go into that at this stage; I would like feedback from Andy first being his forum.

But there are two ways we can do this:

      1. A hosting service dedicated to RT or at least Joomla sites; no other type of site allowed.
      2. A syndicate whereby a number of us get together and take equal shares of the server.

There is alot to be said for a Joomla only server. It can be optimized for Joomla specifically.

I also install an arsenal of security including firewalls and brute force defense. If somone attempts to brute force the passwords, dictionary attackes on the mailserver etc; I get the details and their IP address is automatically blocked.

I also have a very powerful ruleset for mod_security.

You won't get any of those things on shared hosting.

I host serious sites for serious marketers which make alot of money, so I have to get it right.

I also specialise in SEO, linking etc., so we could get quite a party going :)

That is an interesting idea, there are plenty of people in here searching for a VPS type solutions. I guess it depends on the server, but how many individual units could you make from one server?

There are an awful lot of people on these forums in quest of the perfect host. One that offers lots of bandwidth, space, great service, and a cheap price. The problem is, there are a zillion hosting companies out there and there is no way to know if they are run by a guy in his garage or a giant company. (I am sure some of the guys in the garage do a better job) Just look how many posts in this topic alone.

Um. I'll bring the cheap ($$-wise, not quality-wise!!) server if anyone is seriously interested in something like this.

A VPS is not the best solution unless you need shell access to Linux. the amount of RAM you get, unless you pay over $100 per month is not really enough to run more than 2 or 3 fairly active sites, and they are still subject to how the node is being used generally. Also if you have your email accounts on the VPS and you run Spam Assassin, which is a must, that will use almost all the RAM of a low end VPS on its own.

My servers are monitored 24*7 and there are always onsite techs there to deal with any issues if I am not there.

A better solution is a shared server dedicated to Joomla, and of course associated services such as email, which is optimized for the purpose.

Spam Assassin by default likes to start 5 threads (if I am not mistaken).
Run SA with only one thread and it works fine.

That's true; it depends on the amount of email you receive. I receive alot of real email and several times more in spam. I have been in the Internet business for 16 years and owned my domain for 11 years, so I seem to be on alot of spammers lists :)
